Hello!

In a bid to ease cost-of-living pressure, Victorian parents will get a $400 bonus for every child in a government school to help with uniforms, camps and sport.

The Victorian Government, which has announced the School Saving Bonus as part of the state budget, says it will help up to 700,000 students with school costs including excursions and sporting events.

The one-off bonus is available for every child enrolled in a government school in 2025. It will also be available for eligible concession card holders at non-government schools.

How will the $400 payments be accessed?

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan says the payments will be delivered through schools, and the government will work closely with the Department of Education on how to make the process easiest for families.

The support will be provided as a credit towards to the cost of participating in activities in school and vouchers for parents to help with the cost of school uniforms.

The bonus will be provided during term 4 of this year, with families receiving a credit on their school family account – cash won’t be paid directly to families.

“We won’t let any child miss out on the things that make Victorian education great, so we’re giving families the flexibility to use the School Saving Bonus on the things they need – from sports to camps, excursions and uniforms,” Premier Allan said.

  • I thought that one of the benefits of a government school is that there are no costs – ie books etc

  • This will be so helpful. School expenses are so high even in public schools. The cost of books, uniforms and other fees make things very tough when you have a few at school.

  • Hands down the biggest cost of living pressures come from regular expenses like groceries, utilities and rent or mortgages. If it’s not improving those, it’s not really helping. It simply buys you another month perhaps.

  • If it go to needy children that would be great but sometimes parents are able to afford everything but they are working cash in hand and getting Centrelink help and all support.
It should be fare for needy children. They should get it.
