I’ve been doing that thing. You know that thing I go through every few months. I’m going to get fit I say! I’m going to eat better! I will not eat another family bag of M&Ms, to myself! (I say as I literally pop a few in my mouth)

I joined an online exercise program. One for mums. I was excited! I was motivated! And to be honest, really enjoying it for the 4 days that I’ve been trying.

One day I set up the video clip on my phone, sitting it up high where the kids couldn’t reach. I move all the lego pieces and other toys to the side of the lounge room so I had room to stretch and leap!

Today’s clip was core focussed. Perfect I thought! I get to lay down for a while. A rest if you will.

I lay down on my side for some side plank dipping action (I’m sure there’s a technical word but that’s all I got).

Then…my kids got involved

Within a few seconds, my 3-year-old was sitting on my hip riding me like a horse. I tried to channel Hercules’ abs to keep on going during this extra weight challenge. But as I focused on that, my 9-month-old was crawling under my supporting arm trying to get the ball that had rolled away. My arm shaking, trying not to fall on him since he’d set up camp there thinking it was a great place to play. My toddler still yelling yay! Woo! Do it again mummy!

Then I hear on the exercise video “Isn’t this great…some time for you just to focus on you!” I chuckled. Yes. Yes it is fit lady.

This is exercising as a mum.

  • I put both of mine in the double pram and go walking. If I time it right they will fall asleep so I can get an 8km walk in, I try to jog parts of it too. With the weight of the two of them it is a really good workout, especially up hills. I find putting YouTube videos of child friendly yoga on is a great way to get my 2 year old involved. We make animal sounds as we do the poses and he gets to be involved while I get to do yoga. I do weights workouts once the kids are in bed but I have been known to hold my 10 month old while doing squats, lunges, step ups and a few other exercises.


  • It is definitely difficult to even feel like exercising when you have kids. I have tried the fit mum online group and have found those exercises to mostly work with the kids around.


  • This couldn’t be more true.
    Ever since I’ve had my second child I haven’t been able to do any exercise without someone being asleep so I only have one to contend with.
    And this is why I love Tiffany hall so much because as a fitness guru she showed the truth of how a body looks like post partum and told the truth about how long it took her get back into shape after just one baby


  • Exercising should indeed be fun.


  • I always found it too difficult because the kids got underfoot and someone always ended up getting hurt!


  • Yes . Whether they are dumbbells or they are being overhead pressed I’d might as well use then for some exercise. They loved with too. Haha

  • You certainly got plenty of exercise just doing a balancing act with one kid sitting on you the other one hindering you too


  • One reason Im pretty unfit is tat I had to wait for the kids to get old enough to copy e rather than hindering me.


  • haha, yes sometimes you become the gym, but if you do it from the beginning and do it regularly with them, they may join you without interfering, and you can even use them to your advantage. I don’t have heavy weights so having my 8kg or 18kg there for some exercises, really adds a challenge. Or both in some cases.


  • I have learnt to only do things like this when my 2 year old is in bed or he is occupied! Impossible to exercise otherwise lol


  • Kids love getting involved. It makes things take longer but can be fun too.

    • Spot on! It does indeed take longer but yep – it is fun and that is what matters. :)
