A woman sharing her engagement ring online was hoping for ‘oohs and aahs’ and mountains of admiration. Instead, she got a virtual battering, with people calling her proposal ring cheap and tacky costume jewellery.

Recently, we shared a story about a woman complaining about her minuscule diamond. And now we’re talking the opposite end of the spectrum – about jewels that are just too big (is there really such a thing?).

The enormous purple stone was likened to a grape, knuckle duster and even a cockroach when it was shared in the Facebook group That’s It, I’m Ring Shaming.

The woman picked a colossal violet amethyst as the centrepiece of her ring, instead of a classic diamond. The jewel is described as being “over 40 carats” by the proud owner.

The wedding band has been designed to fit at the base of the gemstone and is dotted with more large amethysts.

People Were Not Impressed!

When the post was shared online, cruel comments came rolling in.

Many were amazed that the woman could actually lift her finger with the weight of the stone.

“She’s gonna have a buff a** finger,” said one commenter.

“Can she even bend her finger? That’s just so tacky looking,” said another.

“She takes that thing off and loses 5lbs,” added another critic.

A Bit Funny

The reactions were quite comical:

“Looks like the colour purple pooped all over her,” said one.

“Looks like it came from a cereal box! What the actual hell,”

and

“She has a helicopter pad on her finger.”

Another quipped: “It looks like princess plastic jewellery from the 25 cent bin.”

“I almost threw my phone and stomped it. I thought that was a roach on her hand,” shared one commenter.

According to the person who shared the image, the owner of the ring had been “humble-bragging” about its size and seemed really pleased with it. Good for her.

  • I don’t like it but I wish her all the best.

  • I would not like it for my self but someone likes it thats ok

  • It’s a bit sad that she got so many negative comments. The only thing that matters is if she likes it.

    Reply

  • If she likes it, it’s no one else’s business. Not my cup of tea though, would find it hard to bend my finger.

    Reply

  • I find the responses rather immature.

  • So long as she’s happy who’s to judge? It’s all material at the end of the day and if it doesn’t bother you, don’t worry about it! Some people can be really nasty.

  • I’m not a fan of it and it seems like she is boasting about the ring but I would never make fun of her the way some people are. If you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything.

  • I love purple and all I see is someone else who loves purple and is excited about her engagement/wedding rings. Unfortunately posting something like that opens one up to the opinion of anyone and everyone. If you don’t have anything nice to say, or at least constructive criticism when asked for, then hold your tongue, or fingers.

  • I personally wouldn’t wear it, but if it makes the woman happy let her be. Society is too concerned with judging others over trivial issues.

  • It’s not to my liking or style, but… clearly this woman loves it and it’s her style. Let’s not rain on her exciting news and dampen her spirits. Congratulations on the announcement.

  • The woman just got engaged, that is such huge news and instead people are focussing on the size/colour/quality of the ring. Her huge news has basically been overshadowed by people judging her ring. Whether it is ugly or not is not for anyone else to decide or comment on, you wouldnt tell someone they have an unfortunate looking baby so why tell someone their engagement ring is hideous.

  • I don’t personally like it, but she obviously does. What right do people think they have to attack someone. She is trying to share her happy memories.

  • A ring is a personal choice so if she loves it then good on her. Each to their own

    Reply

  • It’s not something I would wear. Each to their own though. Amethyst is my birthstone but I could never wear it that big.

    Reply

  • Definitely not something I would wear but since she chose it she must love it. I wouldn’t be bragging about it though. She probably picked it just for the bragging rights

    Reply

  • Not something I would ever wear, but if she is happy with it, then it’s really no ones else’s business is it?

    Reply

  • I feel like it must have been a joke, but if not. Oh well. Lol as long as she likes it

    Reply

  • If she likes it and it makes her happy, then I’m happy for her.

    Reply

  • It’s not for me but it obviously makes her happy and she is the one that has to wear it

    Reply

  • Someone people need a good hard look at them selves. Who cares as long as the woman is happy.
