A woman sharing her engagement ring online was hoping for ‘oohs and aahs’ and mountains of admiration. Instead, she got a virtual battering, with people calling her proposal ring cheap and tacky costume jewellery.

Recently, we shared a story about a woman complaining about her minuscule diamond. And now we’re talking the opposite end of the spectrum – about jewels that are just too big (is there really such a thing?).

The enormous purple stone was likened to a grape, knuckle duster and even a cockroach when it was shared in the Facebook group That’s It, I’m Ring Shaming.

The woman picked a colossal violet amethyst as the centrepiece of her ring, instead of a classic diamond. The jewel is described as being “over 40 carats” by the proud owner.

The wedding band has been designed to fit at the base of the gemstone and is dotted with more large amethysts.

People Were Not Impressed!

When the post was shared online, cruel comments came rolling in.

Many were amazed that the woman could actually lift her finger with the weight of the stone.

“She’s gonna have a buff a** finger,” said one commenter.

“Can she even bend her finger? That’s just so tacky looking,” said another.

“She takes that thing off and loses 5lbs,” added another critic.

A Bit Funny

The reactions were quite comical:

“Looks like the colour purple pooped all over her,” said one.

“Looks like it came from a cereal box! What the actual hell,”

and

“She has a helicopter pad on her finger.”

Another quipped: “It looks like princess plastic jewellery from the 25 cent bin.”

“I almost threw my phone and stomped it. I thought that was a roach on her hand,” shared one commenter.

According to the person who shared the image, the owner of the ring had been “humble-bragging” about its size and seemed really pleased with it. Good for her.

  • Its for herself i guess if she likes it she likes it who cares what others think of it…

  • I sure can appreciate a different ring. I had in the past larger rings with stones and engravings but didn’t find them very practical.

  • Omg seriously. If she likes it, no need for the rude comments.
Would I wear it?! No, not to my taste at all, but having worked with jewellery, I know I’d want something unique and not a diamond.

  • If it’s what you love, you shouldn’t feel ashamed because of other people’s rude comments. You be you!

  • Everyone has their own taste, no need to belittle

  • I guess whatever floats your boat – personally I wouldn’t and couldn’t wear something that big as my hands are too small. My wedding, engagement and eternity rings aren’t even that big.

  • I know I shouldn’t criticise but if she works will it be safe or present potential danger.
I don’t think it would be very comfortable to wear if she bends her ring finger much. The stones on the narrow ring may rub on her other fingers too. If she gets married where is her wedding ring going to fit?

  • I think this is great. It’s her fashion.

  • Personally I think it’s quite ugly and looks like cheap costume jewellery. But as long as she likes it…..

  • To each her own. So long she’s happy, so be it.

  • As long as the bride to be likes it then who cares

    Reply

  • As long as she likes it who cares. Personally it’s not to my liking but I would be nasty to her about it

    Reply

  • It’s not to my liking but it’s not my ring. If she likes it well and good …she does not have to please any one but herself.

  • I love Amethyst as it is my birthstone but this is ridiculous. It is far too big and junky looking. That size stone might look ok on a pendant but not on a ring.

    Reply

  • It’s so big! To me it looks more like a dress up ring not so much an engagement ring but that’s only my opinion, I’m not the one having to wear it. I wonder if she will still love it in a few years?

    Reply

  • WOW I absolutely love amethyst, it’s my favourite gem. That is one STUNNING ring. Congratulations hun have a wonderful engagement and stuff those who don’t like your ring. I actually have one very similar and love it.

    Reply

  • No one has to wear the ring but her. If it makes her happy then good for her.

    Reply

  • It’s very big, hopefully she doesn’t accidentally damage with living life, like bumping into things

    Reply

  • I don’t know why people have to be mean about it. It’s her ring, if she likes it, great.
