A woman has taken to the internet for help after discovering her mother-in-law messed with her birth control and she is now pregnant.

The woman shared on Reddit: “I caught MIL messing with my birth control!”

“My husband and I are adamantly child-free people,” the woman wrote.

“For those of you who don’t know exactly what that means, basically we don’t want to have kids … ever. We are in our late 20s and we enjoy our carefree lives so much that we decided that we thought it would be best to never have kids.”

She said some people call them ‘selfish’ but she doesn’t judge others for their choices, so she expects the same in return.

She explained that her MIL had popped over to cook dinner for her husband and herself.

“When I opened the door into our bedroom what I see is what looks like MIL carefully trying to poke holes into our condoms,” she wrote.

“She snaps her head in my direction with this mortifying deer in the headlights look on her face. Like a fish out of water.

“She mumbles something about how she’s ‘trying to save the family’ and frantically runs out of the house before I even have a chance to say anything.”

The woman explained that she chased her mother-in-law, who jumped into her car and took off so fast, she almost ran over her daughter-in-law’s foot.

When her husband arrived home, she told him what had happened.

He was “absolutely horrified” and “says he can’t believe it and never thought she was capable of such a thing. She’s a ‘sweet old lady’.”

Not the first time

To make matters worse, the mother-in-law had been around three weeks earlier when the wife was out.

During that visit, the wife was not home, but the husband said his mother “used the bathroom a few times during her visit” and now they’re worried she has done it before.

In an updated post, the woman says she has since found out she’s pregnant.

“I’m so distraught that I haven’t been able to sleep in the last four days,” she wrote.

“I’m sorry I didn’t update sooner, but I’ve been in a really dark place.”

She says neither of them have spoken to the mother-in-law since the incident had taken place, but she is “lost”.

“I never wanted to have kids sure, but at the same time having an abortion feels so wrong to me even though it’s the most ideal thing to do right now,” she said.

“I can’t believe I’m in this situation right now. I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

She also added, “IF I do decide to keep this baby, she will absolutely have no access to this baby. The only nice thing about this whole mess is the thought of us raising this kid with her in the background with a massive CBF while I play with the little one.”

The couple have also lodged a police report.

“I forgot to mention in the post that we filed a police report on Saturday. This has been documented. At the very least we’re hoping a quick RO can take place.”

Her original post has since been removed and comments locked.

I caught MIL messing with my birth control! from r/JUSTNOMIL

What on earth would you do? Could you ever forgive your MIL?

  • This is disgusting and apalling and disrespectful behaviour. It’s so many kinds of wrong. Selfish. Narcissistic. Just wrong. I’m pleased they reported it. If someone (other than family) had done this, it’s a wrong act, but the added layer of family is just too much. I would never forgive my MIL. She has no right and all she has managed to do is tear her family apart. I hope that brings her comfort and keeps her warm now that she won’t have a relationship with her son.

  • This MIL has some hide. That we would irreparably damage my relationship with her

  • It’s not the MIL choice of them having children. She should have respected their wishes. Now she has lost her son’s respect and may not get to see him for a long time. I would have been horrified if my MIL had done this.

  • I think I could one day forgive her but it would take a long time. I’d be furious and disgusted.

  • What a horrible dilemma – hope that all will work out in the end.

  • You have intercourse you can get pregnant. Birth control fails for many people regardless of if it’s been messed with. None the less pretty awkward

  • The MIL is clearly demented and vindictive. If it were me, I would never see her again. My thoughts are with this couple,

  • That’s a very strange and odd thing of a mother in law to do.. I think I’d I were her i would of just stuck with talking to them about how much she’d love grandchildren!!
I don’t think I’d go as far as to not let her have any access to the baby, but they obviously aren’t close to begin with.

  • Since it was a joint decision not to have any children the MIL had no right to interfere. I could never forgive her. Whatever they decide it’s their decision and no one else’s.

  • This is absolutely outrageous, manipulative and so many other things. I have steam coming out of my ears right now. HOW DARE SHE! This couple have every right to choose their future, nobody else. I can’t imagine a time or place when they will ever be forgiving. They are now in a situation they should never have been in. My thoughts are with this couple and I wish them all the best. I hope they do what is best for them.

  • Like many others have suggested you could refuse her access to your baby. Check out the legalities as she may be able to apply for access via the Family Court. This sometimes happens when parents split up and the grandparents miss out on seeing their grandchild.
You could give her a shock by telling her that she wants a grandchild, is she going to help raise and support the baby until he/she gets a job. I’d love to see the look on her face if you said that to her.

  • I’d never forgive my MIL if she did something like this

  • That is just plain wrong – they had their intentions clearly laid out – it looks like selfishness on the MIL’s part. If I was in this situation and I was adamant that I didn’t want kids I would probably go through the pregnancy and arrange adoption – as there are so many families who long for a child that they can’t have at least this baby would bring another family so much joy. I would be concerned if they kept the baby that there would be issues of resentment etc towards the child and think that would be unbearable to think of :(

  • No excuse and there could never be any trust even if you could move past it.
