Hello!

A dad has been left embarrassed and in shock after changing his baby’s nappy in a women’s public toilet.

The frustrated 31-year-old dad was out shopping when his five-month-old baby filled his nappy and needed a change, but unable to find a parents’ room, he was left with little choice.

“I went over to the restrooms and saw that there wasn’t a family/companion restroom, just a men’s and women’s. I went into the men’s room and saw there was a cubicle and a few urinals, but no changing table. The sink didn’t have a counter either,” he explained on reddit.

“I walked out and hunted down an employee to ask where the changing table was. She said it was in the bathroom, and I asked where, assuming there was a family/companion restroom on the other side of the store. She took me back to where I just was. I asked if there was another bathroom, and she said no. I told her I was just in the bathroom and there was no changing table. She asked if I was sure and suggested I look again.

“I was annoyed, but I went back in the men’s room. No changing table. When I came out the employee was gone. Keep in mind, my son has been in his poopy diaper this whole time.”

Dad nappy change

Juggling a baby with a poo-filled nappy, the dad was fed up with trying to find somewhere safe and clean to change his baby son’s nappy. So he went where he knew there would be a place to change his nappy.

“I give up and head into the ladies’ room which sure enough had a changing table. There was a woman in there washing her hands, and she said, ‘Wrong bathroom, buddy.’

“I gestured to my son and said, ‘No changing table in the men’s room.’ She laughed and said, ‘Bro, that sucks.’ Then she walked out. So I rush to change him, hoping to be done before anyone else walked in. I’m almost done when a woman walks in and starts screaming at me. I tried to explain what I was doing, but she kept screaming, ‘Get out! You can’t be here!’ Then she ran out.”

“I finished putting the diaper on and rushed out of the bathroom. I saw the woman talking to an employee and decided to leave without my stuff. The employee tried to wave me down and stop me, but I rushed out to my car, buckled my son into his carseat and left.

“My wife said I absolutely did the right thing, but my mum said I’m an idiot and was 100% in the wrong. My sister won’t stop laughing at me and is no help at all. Am I the a**hole?”

  • It’s disgusting they way the world has become!

  • You are absolutely NOT in the wrong. It’s about time these shopping centres got with the times and made change tables available in all restrooms. I also think you had no need to run away either, there would surely have been others there who would have supported your actions. Good on you I say.

  • What a champion. Doing what he had to do with whatever was available to him. If anything the screaming lady needs to take a chill pill and suss out the situation before losing her s*#t.

  • If there is not changing table in men toilet i don’t see a problem with taking baby to women toilet.

  • Poor guy, he did everything he could. i wouldn’t have run from the employee though, it didn’t look good. My husband said this is a common thing not having a change table in the mens room

  • I don’t think this man is in the wrong at all. Surely the woman who went into the toilets could see that he had a baby with him and what he was doing, especially if the baby way on a change table. I understand that she might have got a freight when she walked into the ladies toilets and saw a man in there but wake up to yourself and look at what he was doing!
It’s disappointing that there wasn’t at least a disabled toilet, which could have had a change table to save this sort of embarrassment.
What did the staff member think she was going to achieve by yelling out to this Dad? Really. Yell at him when she didn’t sound very helpful to him in the first place.

  • I feel for the poor dad. He had no option. There should be a parents baby change table in all the disabled toilets. They are large enough.

  • What else was he supposed to do?! I can’t believe that there isn’t change mats in both male and female toilets or at least a parent room/disabled toilet with a change mat.
He did the right thing and that woman was overreacting!

  • How great it is to see this man taking his son out shopping! If he had to go to the ladies room to find a change table to change is son’s nappy then so be it. That lady should have applauded him, not ran out screaming that there was a man in there! Surely she could have seen that he had a baby with him. I doubt there would be very few change tables in the Men’s toilets! I’ve seen some in disabled toilets. My ex husband never took my kids out without me when they were little, he had this idea in his head that changing their nappies was disgusting and because we had 3 daughters he shouldn’t have been expected to clean them up and change their nappies because of them being girls. I commend this man for taking his son out and doing all that he could to change his son’s nappy, to clean him up and keep him comfortable.

  • The only thing I would have done if I’d walked into the ladies room while he was changing his son I would have waited till he’d finished before I used the toilet. The only one’s who are the assholes are the female employee who told him to recheck the men’s room then taking off and the establishment for not supplying a parent’s room to allow both men and women to change their baby’s nappies. I wouldn’t have liked to place my child on a counter that wasn’t fit to change a baby on.

  • Good on him! I wouldn’t care if I saw this happening

  • It would not bother me at all about a nappy being changed. I would have stood my ground when yelled at!

  • He had no perfect option – I think he was in the right.

  • What the actual f is wrong with people? People really need to mind their own business. Good on him for changing the baby’s nappy in a safe, hopefully sanitary area.
