Hello!

Woolworths has ditched plastic shopping bags, but the alternative has raised the ire of shoppers who say they aren’t up to the task.

Irate Woolies shoppers have taken to social media to share their frustrations, after the supermarket giant removed all 15c soft-plastic shopping bags from stores and online. It means if you forget your own shopping bags, the only alternative is 25c paper bags.

But it appears the paper bags aren’t tough enough to carry a load of groceries, with shoppers sharing their paper bag ‘fails’.

Woolworths responded to this shopper, saying, “Thanks for sharing these images with us and for reaching out about your experience with our paper bags.

“We’ve now shared this feedback with the relevant team for their awareness and review. We hope your future experiences with us are positive, thanks.”

However, she’s not alone, with others sharing their photos and experiences.

“You’re definitely not the only person, this happened to me last weekend and I noticed a women chasing cans through the carpark this evening after her bags broke,” Chantalle Handley commented.

The same fate befell me over the weekend when I did the weekly shop and forgot my reusable bags. My grocery-laden paper bags made it to the car, but no further, with one blowing out as I lifted it into the car.

Admittedly, they were probably overfilled, and this is a very ‘first world problem’. But, when groceries cost so much at the moment, it is frustrating if items are broken or damaged after falling out of a broken paper bag.

According to Woolworths, their paper shopping bag is designed to be reused, and can carry up to six kilograms of groceries.

“Our paper bags are made from at least 70% recycled paper and have been tested to carry up to 6kg through a range of conditions, whether it’s with chilled items or carried across long distances,” a Woolworths’ spokesperson said in a statement.

Coles has also committed to removing plastic bags by the end of June.

  • I’ve been reading about this a bit lately. Personally I just take my reuseable fabric bags.

  • I get the whole better for the environment thing but man they need to do better still. We order one delivered and sometimes its 2 items per bag and I end up with so many. And they don’t fold away easily to be re used like the plastic ones either so they end up being wasted. Its not better for the environment at all or the pocket.

  • We get home delivered groceries and they only put 4 things in each bag due to how flimsy they are so we end up with heaps!

  • I found that they aren’t that strong. I wonder what they could do? Luckily I usually keep 385 re usable bags in the boot of my car……..I just need to remember to take them in to the supermarket!

  • I have just started now to pick up any empty boxes left in the shop to put my groceries in

  • Probably just better to bring your own bags, or to just dump everything back in the trolley and pack at the car like aldi.

  • Gave up on Woolworths paper bags long ago, we take our REAL bags from Malibu Fresh Essential – Fresh Organic & Gourmet Food …
    Malibu Fresh
https://www.malibufresh.co Never a problem. Shop a great deal less at Woolworths, they removed the plastic bags AND the fresh meat section at our store and introduced prepackaged meat in bullet proof plastic. YES plastic container that would probably make about 10+ plastic bags. So Woolworths has NOT done away with plastic. ***The plastic meat trays probably to contain the water infused in their meat*** Doesn’t cost for water.

  • Reminds me of America where you see these types of bags in the movie except they don’t even have handles!
I don’t know how they would last with things that are wet or frozen.

  • I highly doubt they carry 6kg haha

  • Hmmmm, as soon as I heard of paper bags I was picturing this sort of thing happening. I’ll use my reusable as usual.

  • From the greatest legal thieves they steal our money jack up prices all the time I hate them and they continue to stick it up us all . What can we do ? We have to accept the garbage they give us because we can’t do a thing .

  • Paperbag quality isn’t like the old days. They were sturdy according to my parents. So far, I have had ok luck with woolies paper bags but the handles do tear after carrying for awhile, so have to hold it like a child in my arms. And no, never overfilled.
Good on Woolies wanting to do better for the environment but missed the mark on quality paper bags.

  • These bags are absolutely shocking another way for Woolworths to make more money. I’ve had the same problems with these bags.

  • I was having this issue as well. I have now moved to cotton reusable bags that I bring with me.

  • Don’t worry too much, the greenies will remember why paper bags were stopped in the first place before very long and they will also be stopped. It was something to do with cutting down timber to make the paper bags, so we turned to plastic. I’m sure the trees will be happy again before long too.

  • I use my own bags but I do wonder how well they will hold up with the fridge and freezer products?

  • Oh wow, so many not so happy shoppers. I leave grocery bags in the car so I don’t have to use the paper ones. Some days I forget but I’ll grab a box or ask for a box for my groceries.

  • I always take my own bags when shopping in store but my main shop I do online and they pack into my boot. I think they need to be taught how to pack bags though. I have to buy long-life milk and they’ll put 8 into one bag and 4 into another so naturally it rips and yet if I get one dishwashing liquid and flyspray they will each go into a separate bag by themselves. I worked in a supermarket for over 30 years and we only had paper bags. Mind you those bags didn’t have handles, that could be part of the problem I suppose but think it’s more to do with over-filling them.
