A 10-year-old girl was led into court in handcuffs and charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of a 6-month-old boy.

Accompanied by her parents, the girl from Wisconsin sobbed throughout a 10-minute bond hearing where Judge James Isaacson ordered her to be held on $50,000 cash bond.

She has not been identified because her case likely will be referred to juvenile court. Under Wisconsin law, first-degree homicide charges must initially be brought in adult court if the accused is age 10 or older, reports Star Tribune.

According to District Attorney Newell, police responded to an emergency call on the afternoon of Oct. 30.

A 6-month-old boy at a licensed day care center was found unresponsive and bleeding from the head. The baby was taken to a local hospital and then flown to Gillette Children’s Hospital in St. Paul, where he died Nov. 1.

Police questioned one adult and three children who were present at the day care center. They quickly settled on the girl as the prime suspect, said Chippewa County Sheriff James Kowalczyk.

According to Kowalczyk, the girl said she was holding the baby when she dropped the infant, who hit his head on a footstool. When the baby cried, she panicked and stomped on the child’s head, the sheriff said. A local doctor who examined the baby determined that the injuries were not accidental, he added.

Although the girl’s biological parents were with her in court, authorities said she had been removed from their home in September and placed in foster care with the same family that also runs the day care center where the infant’s death occurred. The reason the girl was placed in the foster home was not disclosed.

  • Just horrifying! But both kids were being cared for so what were the professionals doing while this happened?

  • This does not add up. Yes shouldn”t she have been at school and what was she doing at a day care centre holding babies. where were the the carers at the time. Feel so sorry for that poor little baby and the parents leaving and trusting that day care centre to look after their baby. Nothing makes sense.

  • Should she have been at school? I have a feeling that it might not be the full story but absolutely horrific anyway.

  • What a sad story. My heart goes out to the family of the 6month old who lost their baby boy. And my heart goes out to this 10year old girl, placed into foster care since some months and placed in foster care with the same family that also runs the day care center where the infant’s death occurred. She has clearly gone through a lot and it’s the question if she got the psychological help she needed. Hope she gets it now !

  • Omg terrible. How this girl even got a hold of the baby. So tragic

  • How does this even happen?! A 10 year old shouldn’t be in day care, or left alone with an infant.

  • This is sad all round. Sad for that poor baby boy and sad for this little girl who is clearly going through something major in her life being removed from her birth parents. I really hope they provide this child with the support and help that she needs now and to deal with this death when she’s older as well.

  • Oh my goodness what a sad story. Such a messed up scenario. RIP to the little boy :(

  • Not only the childcare place but the people who put her there in the first place should be held accountable too beside the little girl. It would seem the girl does have problems and hopefully these will be addressed.

    • The girl was in foster care and they own the childcare centre. Legally the Foster Family is responsible for her. I very much doubt the girl would be charged as an adult in Aust.

  • Oh!!!! I feel sick! I wonder if this was an intentional act to show her despite for being in another family’s care. I cannot see why the girl was with a baby unsupervised, she is too old for daycare. Where were the workers!! Thank God Australia has high standards of care, staff qualifications, child to staff ratios, and high standards of safety. This scenario is insane!

  • Why on earth was a 10 year old girl holding a baby in a day-care centre unsupervised. This is an incredibly sad situation.

  • This is just insane. How does this even happen. One life lost and another young life destroyed

  • Oh, that’s so sad. Poor baby. And this girl? Is it 100% sure that the injuries were not accidental? Still to question indeed why a certified day-care centre would let a 10 year old supervise the kids.

  • Should the daycare also be held liable? I know the 10 year old did it but she should not have been unsupervised with a baby.

  • Where is the adult supervision around here, shouldn’t just be blamed on a child the carer should have been supervising in the first place why has that not been brought up!
