Mood swings are a normal characteristic of development for children, so having methods to help trigger the happy side of your child will be key to their emotional wellbeing.
Children usually have not developed the emotional language they need to express and work through any overwhelming emotions they are feeling. This is where engaging in a creative outlet can be helpful as they are able to experience a state of flow. This refers to a detached space from time and place that helps separate and distract kids from their stressed and worried selves.
Providing your child with a distraction, such as a hobby or activity that relaxes them will help to regulate their emotions. This will also show that you understand their needs by supporting them to a better mindset and overall strengthen your bond with them.
Physical activity such as yoga will have a calming effect while enhancing your child’s mood, as it will help to release feel good chemicals such as serotonin and adrenaline.
Beth Borowsky, Founder and CEO of Karma Kids Yoga outlines five simple activities you can do with your child to help boost their mood.
• Finger painting. Finger painting is a sensory experience that gives your child the opportunity to heighten their imagination through creative development. It can be used as a positive outlet for kids to get their hands dirty, particularly on a rainy day.
• Deep breathing. Using deep breaths will reduce the hyperactivity and stress in restless children. It will help them centre their emotions and act as an instant refresh. Kids who are given the tools to self-regulate their breathing will be able to remain level headed and comfortable in testing scenarios.
• Yoga. Practicing yoga with your child will help them to relax, refocus their attention and improve their mood. It provides a retreat for children who are overwhelmed by their emotions and will soothe their temperament.
• Listening to music. Music is used from a young age to calm and soothe children, having positive connotations in their minds. Put on repetitive music that your child is familiar with to encourage singing and dancing that will give an emotional boost.
• Going on a walk together. This is a great activity to spend quality time with your child and encourage conversation. A mindful walk could be a good way to make it fun and interesting, by deciding on whether you are going to listen for new sounds, notice the colour of flowers, notice different smells or feel unusual textures under your feet. The exercise will help your child feel calmer and happier.
Every child needs help in developing their emotions and creating a happy presence. Teaching your child techniques they can use to boost their temperament and create a happy mindset is the key to helping them develop mindfulness that will help them in years to come.
