Two young children left orphaned after both parents killed in QLD car crash.

Police are trying to piece together how the car crash occurred on a straight North Queensland highway in broad daylight, in which a baby boy and his older brother were orphaned.

Parents, Steven Arthur, 34 and Gemma Cosgrave, 37 were killed in the head-on collision with the truck on the Bruce Highway at Conn Creek, north of Townsville, on Tuesday afternoon.

The eight-month-old, who was strapped into a child safety seat, was pulled from the burning Subaru wreck, which burst into flames on impact.

Senior Constable Russ Parker says the boy was lucky to be alive.

“To survive a head-on collision at those sort of speeds, given the vehicles involved, that’s amazing,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

Senior Constable Parker said rescuers had shown “absolute bravery and courage … to overcome (the) flames” to save the child.

“It’s a fantastic effort.”

The boy was taken to Townsville hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Senior Constable Parker said initial investigations suggest the car may have moved into the path of the truck.

Another son Phoenix, seven, was not in the car at the time of the crash and was being cared for by friends.

Tragic news. Our thoughts are with all involved.

  • Such a tragedy. It proves how safe and sturdy correctly fitted good quality baby carseats and booster seats are. At a workshop I saw a car which was a total write-off. It had been rolled over and was back on its wheels when retrieved. Sadly the parents were killed. There was a baby in a babyseat who didn’t have a mark on her. She was taken to hospital for tests and xrays. They couldn’t find any problems. She stayed in hospital for observation for 2 days, then went to live with relatives.
