New technology will soon let expectant mothers print 3D models of their unborn children.

Russian news outlets reported the Embryo 3D service allows medical officials to build the startlingly lifelike models from ultrasound scans, reports 9 news

Video shot in the Russian city of Ufa showed a pregnant woman undergoing a full ultrasound, the scans of which were used by a 3D printer to create a full physical rendering.

Ivan Gridin, the head of Embryo 3D, said the idea had come about when a friend was worried about the health of her unborn child.

“I was fond of new technologies at that time, and 3D-printing,” he said.

“Earlier we printed only from plastic, but now we are able to make plaster models and cover them with precious metals.”

3D technology has previously been used to create virtual models of foetuses, to analyse health, growth and development.

Oh wow!Ā  I love this kind of thing.

Below is a 3D scan of my baby nine years ago. Gosh how much are they changing since then!

  • Um, really. Whilst the technology might be amazing, do we need this? Can’t we just be excited to grow a child and meet it when it is born?

  • Wow, that is rather extraordinary, cheers.

  • I know one Mum who didn’t find out the sex of her baby until a few days before she gave birth. The baby had her legs crossed every time prior to that one.

  • How lovely your 3D scan. When I had the one of my daughter, she was being shy and she was covering her face with one hand. I have a very beautiful picture of her ear though. :-)
