The health of two Australian university students who were injured in a shooting in New Orleans last week is improving.

Jake Rovacsek, 23, and Toben Clements, 21, were shot in the early hours of April 6 after driving from the Bourbon Street tourist strip to the Algiers neighbourhood.

The pair had been in the US competing in the International Collegiate Mining Competition with the Kalgoorlie goldfields-based WA School of Mines.

Both young men have now recovered enough from their injuries to be moved out of intensive care within the hospital.

Deborah Terry, Vice-Chancellor of Curtin University said in a statement that while both students are still hospitalised, she was very pleased to advise their condition on the whole continues to improve.

Parents of both students were with them in New Orleans.
