Anyone who has packed for a trip before knows that you need at least 6,286 outfits for a 5 day holiday. I mean, what if it gets cold whilst you’re trying to relax in a tropical paradise?

Well, this woman seems to have packed a few extra items that gave the scales a nudge and came up with a hilarious way to save some money on excess baggage.

In a recent post on Facebook, Gel Rodriguez is seen sporting as much clothing as she could possibly put on at the airport, and man oh man did it give me the giggles.

When told that her suitcase weighed more than the airlines limit and excess baggage fess would apply, the crafty traveller decided to find a way to save her money. By taking out most of her clothing and wearing it all at the same time, Gel managed to reduce the weight of her baggage by 2.5kgs, taking it from 9kgs to 6.5kgs – that’s pretty well done if you ask me!

She captioned the photo with “when the airline staff at the check in counter said: “EXCESS NA PO KAYO, 7kg lang po allowed na hand carry.” me: NO PROBLEM! ????” *from 9kg to 6.5kg baggage ???? #ExcessBaggageChallengeAccepted

Over 20,000 people have shared the image, and there are 700 plus comments. Some commenting on her genius idea, others saying they’ve seen it before and most, simply tagging a friend to have a bit of a giggle.

Though it’s not the first time a traveller has gone to extremes to avoid paying excess baggage costs, one man from the UK made his own coat which had enough space to store everything he would take in a carry on, including shoes, outfits and even toiletries!

Seeing photos like this make my day, what a funny woman!

  • Haha! I’m totally remembering this one!

  • Definitely gave us the giggles too.

  • I feel like I’d get too hot lol.
I usually wear my jacket on the plane to save space if I ever travel and that’s about it :)

  • lol..the picture sure is funny! but i doubt i’d be able to do this :D :D

  • Packing efficiently and wearing your one heavy jacket would be my tip.

  • That is so funny, however if it works Que Sera Sera!

  • It would of been a very uncomfortable trip with all those layers. My trick is to reduce what my husband has in his case and top it up with my essentials!

    • Exactly what I do ! My husband is rather minimalistic and I’m not…I can learn from him ;)

  • Haha lol done it before so hilarious why wouldn’t you for example you put your biggest jackets on wear your heavy shoes ect

  • I would’t do it either. An extra coat or an extra sweater, fine. But all those clothes.. not really.

  • If everyone did this, the plane would never take off (or worse, run out of petrol!)

  • I like her thinking although it would feel like a long flight having all that stuff on. I like to store socks in my shoes, to save space and I roll a lot of things, however this doesn’t change the weight. Having a husband or flight partner who doesn’t take much is my answer and then her can carry half my stuff in his suitcase ha ha.

  • It would be so hot and uncomfortable on a plane with all of those clothes on.
There are luggage allowances for a good reason and this is not something I would do.

  • She must have been so hot and uncomfy on the plane !

    • It is so important to stay cool and hydrated on a plane too.

  • I think everyone has done this to some extent. ..I don’t understand though, the weight is still on the plane?

  • I know a Mum who had to pay for excess baggage. She didn’t know if she could get boiled water on the plane for her young baby so she mixed the bottles at home. The most annoying part was the plane was delayed for so long that the baby had drunk 2 bottles before they boarded the plane and she would have been overweight.
