Anyone who has packed for a trip before knows that you need at least 6,286 outfits for a 5 day holiday. I mean, what if it gets cold whilst you’re trying to relax in a tropical paradise?

Well, this woman seems to have packed a few extra items that gave the scales a nudge and came up with a hilarious way to save some money on excess baggage.

In a recent post on Facebook, Gel Rodriguez is seen sporting as much clothing as she could possibly put on at the airport, and man oh man did it give me the giggles.

When told that her suitcase weighed more than the airlines limit and excess baggage fess would apply, the crafty traveller decided to find a way to save her money. By taking out most of her clothing and wearing it all at the same time, Gel managed to reduce the weight of her baggage by 2.5kgs, taking it from 9kgs to 6.5kgs – that’s pretty well done if you ask me!

She captioned the photo with “when the airline staff at the check in counter said: “EXCESS NA PO KAYO, 7kg lang po allowed na hand carry.” me: NO PROBLEM! ????” *from 9kg to 6.5kg baggage ???? #ExcessBaggageChallengeAccepted

Over 20,000 people have shared the image, and there are 700 plus comments. Some commenting on her genius idea, others saying they’ve seen it before and most, simply tagging a friend to have a bit of a giggle.

Though it’s not the first time a traveller has gone to extremes to avoid paying excess baggage costs, one man from the UK made his own coat which had enough space to store everything he would take in a carry on, including shoes, outfits and even toiletries!

Seeing photos like this make my day, what a funny woman!

  • My eldest daughter and I had this issue once after clearing out my Mums house when she passed away. My daughter put on the fur coat she had wanted and it was a summers day. Once through security she took it off and carried it.

  • Not all things are equal with seats, size and weight of luggage even before you pack. Huge excess charges too, so a few kilos of extra clothes to wear if you can cope, is a good saving.

  • Oh my goodness. That would make for a very uncomfortable flight

  • How funny thanks for sharing this article

  • People have been doing that forever! My husband used to wear his trench coat as a kid and it would also be full to overflowing with food they were taking on holiday that you could only buy here!

  • That is funny, thanks for sharing.

  • So the weight limits do not work if the airlines still keep only weighing suitcases and not humans.

  • Wouldn’t like to do this in summer :)

  • The first time I went overseas I hit excess baggage at the Sydney airport before I left

  • LOL my husband actually did this too on his last trip, although maybe in a little less obvious way! And the thing is once you go through the check in process they don’t weigh your bag again so you can go into the bathroom and take it back off.

  • I laughed at the photo. Very funny…at least until everyone dies it and the plane becomes a lot heavier. I’d be scared of making the plane crash. But then again that’s probably my anxiety ????????‍♀️????

  • To be honest if I had extra, I would rather just pay the extra to be comfortable on the flight!

  • I do this! lol I wear a dress and put extra clothes under, I bring a backpack or a large handbag thats not going to be weighed and neatly put extras in. I’ve managed to bring and take a lot, usually I take less and bring back more (esspecially gifts and things). If theres a will, theres a way!
