Laura Gerson from the UK posted her clever idea on Facebook and it has been shared thousands of times.

Laura posted in Facebook group The Motherload how she had found “a weird bedtime routine that’s worked”.

“Since my little one was about 3 months old she’s gone to bed with roughly 10 dummies in with her.

“Found that when she cried of a night all she wanted was a dummy then she’d go back off. Realised that if she had one to hand then she would just find it of a night, trial and error with her losing a few down the side but 99% of the time she feels around, finds a dummy, sticks it in and she’s sorted!

“Haven’t had to go into her of a night for about 8 months now… WINNING!!

Laura added, “I don’t even wanna think about the time when the “Dummy Fairy” comes to take them away though!”

dummy tip

Parents with little ones that LOVE their dummy will be so relieved to read this.

I always had 2 or 3 on hand. But I wish I had thought of this!

  • A friend of mine who lives interstate has a baby who if she cries too much her windpipe gradually starts to close. They are hoping the problem will rectify itself. She has been rushed to hospital a couple of times when she started to go blue around her mouth. For the baby the dummy has been essential. She doesn’t suck on her fingers at all. At some point they will be able to stop giving her a dummy, an easier exercise than stopping her sucking her fingers in her sleep. I know a young boy who did that. If either of his parents woke up during the night they would go in and check him + take his fingers out of his mouth. It took years and numerous different ideas to get him out of the habit

  • Bit extreme, baby could be crying for another reason. I am so glad I did not go down the dummy path. No dummies or bottles. Breast and then learned to sleep after stories and sippy cup of rice milk.I think dummies are germ carriers and cause a lot of speech problems.

  • We did this with our Punks, one had a collection of about 8 and the other only had two that she would take so they were always in there with her. We figured out this strategy pretty early on!

  • I’m glad my kids never had dummies !
I once had a 2yr old emergency foster child placed who had a dummy. She was extremely upset and had to cry a lot and every time she started crying she threw her dummy across the room. I don’t know how often I went in the night to try and find her dummies. At one night I couldn’t find her dummies and remembered I had some stored in boxes in my garage. I went to the garage somewhere in the middle of the night to find the boxes with dummies….what a pain !
