For die-hard fans of Australia’s beloved blue heelers, a Bluey birthday cake is the answer to a celebration they’ll never forget.

The good news is that when it comes to creative birthday cakes like this, most of the effort is in the decorating. The cakes themselves often start with standard pans that many of us have on hand. But if you are pressed for time or low on oven space, the massively versatile Woolworths Mud Cake is widely available to form the foundation of your masterpiece.

When it does come to decorating, don’t panic! Thanks to the huge amount of supplies available in Australia (we’re talking sprinkles, ready-made icing shapes and gel food colouring to name a few), a knock-out Bluey cake is very possible with minimal skills. All you need is a little imagination, a few dollarbucks and lots of love.

How to make a Bluey birthday cake

Making a successful and memorable Bluey cake starts with the right equipment. You’ll need standard cake pans or store-bought cakes, a stand mixer or hand beaters for making your buttercream icing, a cake tray, an icing scraper and decorating tools. You’ll also need some patience – because cake decorating is all about details!

Next, you need to decide what style of cake you want to make. Here are some of the types our team of mums regularly use for kids’ cakes:

  • Numbers - Number cakes usually involve cutting standard round and bar-shaped cakes to create the shape. If in doubt, we recommend referring to the Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake book (every Aussie mum’s birthday cake bible!) for easy templates for all numbers.
  • Cylinder - This usually involves stacking two or three 20cm round cakes and using buttercream between them to hold it all together.
  • Characters - These can be as simple or complex as you like! Try your hand at the famous Bluey duck cake for a crazy combination of chips and icing, or take on one of the show’s characters, like Aunt Trixie, Nana or Muffin. See below for some incredible examples and check out these Bluey cake hacks for some great Bluey and Bingo character ideas using the Woolies mud cake.
  • Slabs - One of the easiest creations ever, these give you a lovely flat surface for decorating in unlimited ways.
  • Cupcakes - Individual Bluey cupcakes look adorable and save you from the mess that comes with cutting a cake. They’re also a cinch to decorate, especially if you whip up some homemade cake toppers with toothpicks and printed images.

With your cakes at the ready, it’s time to decorate! Arm yourself with a basic buttercream icing recipe and/or stock up on ready-made fondant, also known as sugar paste. Then take some inspiration from the incredible examples below, or design your very own Bluey birthday cake worthy of the party table!

28 Bluey Birthday Cake Ideas For Kids Of All Ages

Whether you’re a confident decorator or a total newbie, a Bluey cake is possible at any skill level. Better yet, it’s a fun and super cute project that you know will bring huge smiles to little dials.

Here are some of our favourite Bluey cake ideas from clever bakers and determined mums from our own community. Our hats go off to every single one of them.

The Bluey Duck Cake

The Bluey Duck Cake became a huge hit after Season 2, episode 43 (a must-watch!). But in actual fact, the cake was first made famous in the vintage edition Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book, which is where you will still find step-by-step instructions on how to pull this crazy combination of sweet and savoury together.

You’ll need a bar cake and a square cake to carve into the Rubber Ducky shapes. Bamboo skewers help hold everything together and lashings of fluffy icing (which the original recipe says to tint with apricot icing!) cover the cake. Then, it’s time to decorate with yellow-coloured sweet popcorn, potato chips, Smarties and strip licorice. Just don’t forget the red satin bow!

We can’t stop gazing at this cake – the detail is extraordinary and the palette irresistible. This year we organised a Bonce party for my girl and they have the policy not to bring foods in, so it was a simple ice cream cake. • Wow these all look fantastic. They are an all day job, and then some. I remember the first character cake I made about ten year ago was an Olaf cake. The first time I ever tried using Fondant and it was a great job if I do say so myself. My tip is find a friendly cake decorating shop, they can help and talk you through your ideas and bring it to fruition.
