First it was mullets and now it’s perms – the ’80s have come knocking and our boys have answered the door. Say hello to the era of boy perms.
I’ll admit, I loved the ’80s. The fashion, the music and of course, the hair. Teased fringes, flattops, mow-hawks and perms. The tighter the curl, and the higher the hair, the better. And just like the much-maligned mullet, perms are making a comeback. And combining both to get a permed mullet? That’s king.
Boys are flocking to their hairdresser, asking for perms in droves. And a quick search through Instagram and TikTok uncovers hundreds and hundreds of inspo photos and videos.
Boy perms trend not just for kids
From primary school-aged kids to high schoolers and grown men, the boy perm trend is having more than just a moment. In fact, it’s been building for the past couple of years. But with lockdowns, getting to the hairdresser has been a difficult task. So kids were turning to the old-fashioned method of using curlers. But now that we’re allowed back in the salon chair, hairdressers are finding their books filled with perm bookings for blokes.
Mum of three boys, Jeannette Isley, has already let her 15-year-old, 9-year-old and five-year-old perm their hair half a dozen times in the past 12 months.
She told TODAY that ‘they love it’ and get compliments on their hair wherever they go. We have to say, they do look absolutely adorable!
