This new burnaway cake trend is fire – literally! Just when you think you’ve seen every kind of gender reveal cake, comes the hottest, new thing – burnaway cakes.

And it’s exactly what it sounds like – a cake that’s lit on fire, burning away to reveal the cake underneath. Sounds crazy, but it’s actually really simple!

Cake creators use printed edible sheets (rice or wafer paper sheets) on top of the actual cake – and then set it on fire. But only the rice paper burns, revealing something underneath – in the case of this new trend – the gender of a baby!

The image underneath is printed on a frosting sheet, that doesn’t burn. So you’re still left with a yummy cake!

According to Toronto cake decorator Cakes By Nams, the burn time is about 40 seconds, so not too long to wait until you can have a slice of cake.

Of course there are plenty of people commenting that the cake would taste like ash afterwards, and it is obvious that some ash falls onto the cake, but once that’s cleared off – it’s cake as usual!

Cake artist Denise Steward is credited with starting the fiery trend with her viral New Year’s Eve cake – what a beauty!

We love that these cakes can be used for so many different occasions.

  • Is that really safe to eat afterwards?!
    They look pretty though.

  • I have seen these in tik toks. Not something I am interested in, but I can see why people would like it

  • It’s certainly not something I’d do but it is much cheaper than hiring skywriters or flyovers.

  • I’ve been seeing lots of those cake burning videos in my feeds lately. Not something I’d do – I don’t really want to pick the ash off my cake but would be cool to see it in person. A gener reveal has a bit more meaning behind the burn than some I’ve seen

  • I’m not a fan of the whole idea of gender reveals, but at least this is a relatively harmless approach.

  • So it’s a paper covering the cake that burns away to reveal an actual cake? I never had gender reveals, I never knew what sex my babies were til they were born, but if I had to have one I’d want one that packed a bigger punch then this

  • Nah, not for me. Doesn’t appeal to me. Not a fan of gender reveal parties.

  • I can’t quite understand why so much fuss is made over the gender reveal. In my day you would just tell people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Gender reveals are the biggest waste of time and money!

  • That’s different. I’m not really into the whole gender reveal trend, but the idea is definitely novel.

  • I much prefer this over the other options, balloons or streamer poppers that are just unnecessary plastic. Or even worse, explosives that cause huge wild fires! And you get to eat it!
Personally I don’t think gender reveals are a thing, but each to their own.

  • We simply never felt for revealing the gender. But it’s certainly a different way to reveal the gender if that is what you want. My first thought was too that the cake would possibly have a burned taste/smell.

    • I agree; we liked to keep it quiet until the arrival. I agree; I wonder how the cake would taste?

  • Not appealing to me; the cake trend or gender reveals.

  • It’s more restrained than most gender reveals. That’s a good thing.

  • There is always something new. This seems to be an American post so I wonder how long until they turn up here.

  • Interesting idea! I was boring and found out from the doctor and didn’t tell anyone haha.
