A popular topic today is the news that thousands of childcare workers across Australia will walk off the job at 3.20pm.

The time they say they start working for free because of low wages.

The national action today is expected to be the biggest sector walk-off in Australian history, and is the second this year after a protest in March failed to influence the federal budget.

United Voice assistant national secretary Helen Gibbons said early childhood educators earned $21 per hour despite required qualifications to work in the sector.

“Prime minister, love does not pay the bills, it does not pay your mortgage or your energy bills,” she said.

“Early childhood educators are growing increasingly frustrated and angry about the lack of action from the government on funding the professional pay that this highly qualified and skilled sector deserves.”

It is expected more than 3000 workers will walk off the job nationwide.

The workers want the Fair Work Commission to agree to a 35 percent pay increase.

Has the walk out impacted on your day today?

  • It doesn’t make sense that child care centres charge so much yet their workers get paid so little. Someone is making a lot of money at the expense of parents and employees.

  • It has not impacted on me – childcare workers do indeed deserve fair pay.

  • I think they are being responsible with the time they’ve chosen to strike.

    • According to the news they chose this time because from that time onwards they end up working for free – no wages!

  • They do deserve a higher wage for what they do,l hope they get it!

  • Such a hard balance. They deserve more pay, but child care is already so expensive.

  • What ? Better pick my youngest up from childcare before 3.20pm !

  • It hasn’t impacted me but I definitely think think its fair. Its not easier looking after other peoples brats all day so they can earn double what you get.
