This has to be one of the most adorable cake trends we’ve ever seen! Comic cakes, or 2D cartoon cakes are the cutest darn cakes around – and they’re deceptively simple to make.

Comic cakes are basically regular cakes that are decorated in a cartoonish way, so they look 2D. By placing black fondant strips or black icing as an outline to parts of the cake, it completely changes their look. And the beauty of this is you can use it for any type of creation, from Bluey cakes to treats for the big kids!

One of our favourite cake artists, Tigga Maccormack has even shared a tutorial on TikTok so you can make your own slice of cartoon cake.

Tigga used leftover cake, cut into triangles to form a cake slice shape. After sandwiching the pieces together using ganache, before covering the cake in the same ganache. After smoothing it out, she covered the whole cake in fondant. She then used different coloured fondant to create a drippy icing look and the layers of the cake slice, before topping with a fondant cherry.

Then comes the fun part! Tigga used an extruder to make long, rounded strips of black fondant which are then used to outline parts of the cake – much like a cartoon outline. She even topped it with a fondant candle. It looks amazing! Try the technique on other birthday cakes to create a 2D masterpiece.

Here’s another great tutorial from Little Cherry Cake, if you’re keen to give this trend a go for your next birthday celebration.

We just adore these amazing examples from Yummy Bakes, they are absolute perfection!
