The latest edition of St John’s Grammar School’s Learning Early Series addresses a topic that causes great angst among many parents: discipline and behaviour. Parents often worry about how their child will behave and how discipline will be exercised at school.

Episode 7 of the Learning Early Series

This episode allows parents to prepare their child for what is expected of him or her, in  advance of the first day of school.  It reminds parents that when a child starts school, he or she is incorporated into a system where expectations and values are very clearly stipulated and embraced heartily by peers. Being accustomed to rules and values makes it easier for children to integrate.   In this episode, families are encouraged to establish a set of values and rules in the household and make sure that the child/children are infinitely aware of them. Some suggested values are: care, empathy, respect and kindness.

Parents are also taught to separate behaviour from the child and how to encourage and reward good behaviour.
