Hello!

When Target first made the big announcement that they would be closing some Target stores and rebranding others to Kmart, I didn’t worry too much. My beloved local wasn’t in the initial list they released last year. BUT Target has now updated the list and I’m devastated (and shocked) to see that my beloved Target store is getting the chop.

Last year, we reported that Wesfarmers were looking at converting 92 large format Target stores and Target Country stores into Kmart branches, while around 75 Target stores are expected to shut its doors permanently.

The company said that this move is to “improve the commercial viability of the business and to support the thousands of people we employ.” The organisation aims “to make it smaller, more focused, less complex and more digitally enabled so we can better serve our customers both instore and online.”

Some of the changes already took place last year, while the majority of the shake-up is going to be actioned over the next few months.

Target has recently updated its website with all the stores that will be affected by these changes and there have been some updates from last year.

There are a large number of Target stores that will be closing their doors forever. The full list is below:

What Will Happen To Target Staff?

“Target team members impacted by store closures will be given priority consideration for new roles created in Kmart and Catch as these businesses continue to grow. In addition, Wesfarmers has established a cross-divisional working group to identify redeployment opportunities for affected team members, including in Bunnings and Officeworks. Where there are no Wesfarmers businesses in town, we’re also working with other employers to try and find opportunities for our team. Target team members who are unable to be redeployed will be provided with access to support services, along with all entitlements.”

So there’s going to be a lot of changes in the Target/Kmart space this year. But I better sign off and head for a Target shop before it closes down forever.

  • Our local store became a kmart which was awesome. The Target was not very popular but the kmart is.

  • Kmart only sells cheap Chinese crap that breaks. The clothes sell like chemicals.

  • My local target I never see anyone there it’s never busy what happened it used to be such a great shop to shop in. Kmart always busy always have to wait in line maybe it’s because all the product are like each other the difference is the huge price difference

  • Kmart all the wayyyyy

  • Looks as though my Target store has survived, but it’s hard to find goods in my store at the current time. So many areas are very sparse due to being unable to get things in from overseas as almost nothing is made locally these days.

  • Our local Target which stood for over 50 years is turning into a Wo9olworths. Personally I would prefer a KMArt

  • Our local store remains open. Worst comes to worst, you can still shop there online

  • Our local store wasn’t on that list but shut this weekend. Hard for small communities when we lose these shops.

  • Oh wow. My local store is converting to Kmart. I like it as Kmart prices are good than Target.

  • No changes for us, but how sad that they’re closing in some areas.

  • Our nearest “local Target” is 2 hours away and that will be converted into a Kmart store. The next one is 3 hours away and it looks like this will remain as they already have a Kmart store as well as a Target store. Hopefully all the staff are given the opportunity to stay on if they so wish.

  • Theyre closing my local!

  • But I prefer Target most of the time!!

  • At least our 2 in Launceston are staying- that being said, perhaps they could have kept Devonport and closed one of the 2 Launceston stores?

    Reply

  • Fortunately, my local store is staying (at least for now), I love Target!
