This calculator can reveal your sleep loss dependent on how old your children are – and it may shock you.

The calculator, created by hillarys.co.uk, also reveals how many nappies you’ve changed, how many bedtime stories you’ve read and how many lullabies you’ve sung.

A spokesperson said: ‘Research was carried out to determine how much sleep new parents lost per night during the first 12 months, up to 18 months, 24 months and then past that.

‘The averages are then used, whilst also taking into account multiple children, to give parents a rough idea of how much sleep they’ve lost since becoming a parent.’

Sleep lost
5.1 hours a night in the first 12 months
4 hours per night 12months -18months
3.45 hours per night 18-24months

Nappies changed
12 a day first 3 months
8 a day 3-18 months
5 a day 18-24 months

Lullabies
4 a night until 3 years old
Bedtime stories read:
3.5 a week until 7 years old

It looks like I have lost nine months worth of sleep over the past 14 years!

  • Hahah the was good fun.
In 3 1/2 years I’ve lost 7 months sleep and changed 9200 nappies.
Pretty accurate, with the sleep I’d say

  • It’s so scary to see it in actual numbers lol! I have done some silly things in my sleep deprived state – I think the silliest one was spooning coffee straight onto the counter instead of a cup. I really needed coffee that day!

  • Maybe they should try to calculate much sleep the average grandparent loses if he/she cares for the child one night or longer in a month. I don’t the parents even think about it.

  • Um, too frightening to actually work out. Obviously, it’s different for everyone. I had a child who didn’t sleep for the first 8 months, and screamed 24/7 for the first 12 months so… I’ve no doubt it’s not accurate for me. However, if we knew how much sleep we were not going to get, we may not procreate.

  • Not sure on how realistic the calculator is. But I’ve supposedly lost 8months of sleep with a 6 yr old and 1yr old.
Both are great sleepers once they get ready for bed.

  • The loss of sleep calculator should go beyond 6 years old. What about the teenage years when you stay awake waiting for the door to open so you know they are home from their night out safely?

    • Lol! A very good point about the teen years!

  • Reasonably lucky in our household – not too much sleep deprivation.

  • Don’t think the calculator works very well, but not so important. Losing some sleep while having kids is part of this lovely package :)
