Five-year-old boy airlifted to hospital after he was hit by a car while riding his bike.

The child was struck by a Nissan Patrol on Siltstone Avenue in Horsley, near Wollongong, just after 3pm on Saturday.

Police said the boy was riding his bike along a footpath with other children when he rode onto the road and into the path of an oncoming car.

The five-year-old was treated by paramedics at the scene before being airlifted to the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick.

The driver of the car, a man aged in his 30s, was uninjured. He was taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Officers from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command attended and a crime scene was established. Inquiries into the incident are continuing.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

  • Sad to hear of this, but it would appear from the description that the child rode out in front of the car. You have to be so diligent with young children around, hope the young 30 yo can also get over this trauma. I know one young man who hit a child, it was proved he wasn’t at fault, but he never drove again.

  • I hope this little boy will be okay. My thoughts are also with the driver who must be feeling terrible.

  • A timely reminder to remind kids to stop and look before crossing the road. Hope he is ok and makes a quick recovery

  • I hope both child and driver are ok. The driver would be feeling awful to have struck the boy.

  • Hope and pray the boys gonna be ok.
I’m from the Netherlands and there bikers have priority over cars and throughout the country are many bike-lanes, only to be used by bikers.

  • I have seen what could have been some nasty accidents through people riding off footpaths into the path of a vehicle or almost hitting the side of one.
I know a child who was about 2 1/2 years old when he suddenly let go of his Mother’s hand and ran into the side of a car in a Shopping Centre Car Park.
There was a younger child in the stroller.
