A public funeral service will be held today for little Sanaya Sahib who will be farewelled one week after she was originally reported missing.

Less than 24 hours after her mother, Sofina Nikat, told police she had been taken from her pram in Olympic Park in Heidelberg West, the 14-month-old’s body was found in the Darebin Creek.

Ms Nikat was charged with her daughter’s murder on Tuesday.

The funeral service is open to the public from 10.45am on Saturday at Bunurong Memorial Park, followed by a private, family-only burial.

A vigil and balloon releasing ceremony was held for Sanaya on Friday, with over 200 people in attendance.

The funeral should never have occurred because this tradgedy should never have been allowed to happen in the first place!!!

  • I was following this story while visiting Victoria. Now back home in Tas, it’s not in the news as much. Just wondering if any light has been shed on why the mother murdered her daughter? Such a horrific tragedy, that poor little girl, so very very sad

  • R.I.P Sanaya. Your life was cut way too short by someone who should have been there to protect you, not harm you.

  • An innocent little girl’s life taken by the “Mum”. Hopefully now the funeral has been held, her dad and other family members will be allowed to grieve in private.
