If you’re the parent of a student with an eye to becoming a writer, one who perhaps someday dreams of becoming a journalist, they now have a chance to set themselves on the path to making those dreams a reality, thanks to a recently-launched competition.
Having their voices heard is one of the main goals of any would-be writer, and in a media landscape where the country’s younger voices are seldom heard, there now is an opportunity for these voices not only to have a vehicle, but to be amplified like never before.
It’s the words and ideas of these students that best reflect the state of the education world as it is right now, and by giving student writers the chance to express their thoughts and experiences in a major forum will better enable productive conversations to be had and improve the outcomes for students and schools.
I am proud to be part of Education Perfect, an organisation that is working to highlight the important role young and emerging writers’ voices play. The Student Voices writing competition is a direct result of that understanding, and has been launched as part of EP’s Student Spotlight September.
The Competition
The competition is open to students from all over the world and asks entrants to select a topic and write an article on it between 600 and 800 words in length from one of three areas:
- the role of technology in education;
- the future of education; or
- the experience of learning during COVID-19.
The piece needs to be written in a way that both encapsulates the student’s voice, as well as includes their experiences as someone currently experiencing education in these extraordinary times.
The best five submissions will be published on TBS Next Gen and the winning student will receive editorial mentorship and a monthly column published on The Big Smoke with mentorship from their staff writers for six months.
As parents, we all know how much of a positive impact extra-curricular activities can have on your child’s future, so if writing is something they are passionate about, entering this competition will be a great experience…and may just nab them there very own monthly column!
The competition closes on 30 October 2020.
