In a study that flies in the face of every Grinch and Scrooge that exists, researchers have found that people who put their Christmas decorations up earlier, are happier. So get your jingle on.

If you’re the type of jolly fellow who dusts off the Christmas wreath and tree as soon as the Halloween decorations are down, then you’re as happy as can be, according to the experts.

Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown says putting up decorations early (and we’re assuming this means before December 1), gives us all of those nostalgic warm and fuzzy feelings that transport us back to our childhood.

“In a world of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of childhood,” McKeown told Unilad.

“Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement so putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!”

Psychotherapist Amy Morin explained that there may be other reasons putting up Christmas decorations early makes us feel good.

“Perhaps the holidays serve as a reminder of when a loved one was still alive. Or maybe looking at a Christmas tree reminds someone of what life was like when they still believed in Santa.

“For people who have lost a loved one, the holidays may serve as a reminder of happy times they had with that person in the past. Decorating early may help them feel more connected with that individual.”

In one study researchers indicate that we even perceive people in houses that are decorated as more ‘friendly, sociable and accessible’.

“The results support the idea that residents can use their home’s exterior to communicate attachment and possibly to integrate themselves into a neighbourhood’s social activities,” researchers wrote.

    • It can indeed bring joy and be a time to unwind and relax and reflect on a busy year about to pass and anticipate all the good adventures a new year will bring.

  • We have three Christmas decorations/ornaments that are kept out all year round because we love them so much!

  • I think it is totally true, I am always rushing to put them up on the day before Christmas and I am a bit like the Grinch

  • I can see how it would make people happier, it does symbolise a special time of the year. I’m planning on putting ours up shortly, just as soon as we upgrade our tree. It’s our first Christmas with our baby so I’ll probably be a little extra this year. About to finalise the order for our matching pj’s (thanks to your article for the heads up!)

  • I love Christmas but only start decorating in December. With small children it’s hard to keep the tree decorations in one piece and the presents under the tree wrapped.

    • Lol yes, glorious days 🙂 I often wrapped some empty boxes up for show and kept the real present hidden away till Xmas morning
