Summer is here and the weather is warming up again, babies are prone to overheating very quickly so it’s incredibly important to keep them cool on hot days.

Here are some tips on keeping your babies cool on those hot, hot days …

  1. Keep them inside where possible on extreme heat days.
  2. If you have to be outdoors, stay in the shade.
  3. Use a summer weight baby carrier if out and about as some of the baby carriers are made of very thick material and can make your baby overheat.
  4. Offer them more breast milk or formula so that they stay hydrated.
  5. Take them for a dip with you at the pool or beach early in the morning or late afternoon when it’s cooler.
  6. Don’t overdress your baby, make sure are dressed in thin breathable clothing.
  7. Keep the house as cool as possible for them by keeping the blinds and curtains shut in the day and opening up windows at night when it’s cooler.
  8. If your house is hot, find some air-conditioning, head to the friend’s house or the shops.
  9. Give baby a cool bath.
  10. Use a cold face washer and wipe down your babies skin to cool it.
  11. Freeze fruit and yogurt treats for older babies to suck on.

  • I always kept wet cool flannels close so I could wipe them down often – then the breeze seems to keep them cooler longer when outside in the shade.

  • When my kids were babies/toddlers , when it was hot , I made sure they wore a hat ( if you can find one that covers the neck) , cotton cool clothing and always bring a bottle of cooled boil water . If you travel by car , it can get very hot inside and can even burn through the windows so always keep cool and of course never leave a baby in the car like some silly parents do .

    • Good and important reminder to never ever leave kids in the car. That goes for pets too!

  • Mine was born early December in the Pilbara – your tips sound perfect. Don’t forget to keep baby car seat shaded (even with a towel) when car is parked as this keeps it a little cooler on hot days.
