Mother arrested after nine-year-old boy in hospital after being mauled by a dog and his five-year-old brother is feared drowned in the Murray River.
Police were called to the river at 7pm Thursday to find the nine-year-old boy in the water with serious dog bite injuries before learning his brother was missing, reports ABC news.
Police divers have been called in to search for the five-year-old this morning.
The older boy was taken to Echuca Hospital before being transported to a hospital in Melbourne for treatment.
ABC News understands the dog that bit the boy was reacting to what was happening in the water and was not a family pet.
The children’s mother, a 27-year-old Deniliquin woman, has been arrested and is helping police with inquiries.
Update 2pm
Superintendent Paul Condon on Friday said the 27-year-old woman had been interviewed by Deniliquin detectives “and they are now preparing documents for her extradition and charge of attempted murder”, reports 9 news.
Supt Condon said the woman lived in Deniliquin area and was released from jail about a month ago. He said police hoped the five-year-old boy would be found alive.
