Hello!

When it comes to rockstar mums, Heather Skaats takes the cake. The incredible mum calmly pulled over on the side of the road and birthed her baby, while her five other children waited patiently in the car.

She then drove herself back home, with the baby still attached via the umbilical cord.

“Well, I had another wonderful water birth planned at home just as I had in the past,” Heather explained in a Facebook post. “That didn’t go as planned.”

She says she was driving the car with all of her children aboard (Kaelynn, 13, Aneleigh, 11, Austin, 6, Luke, 3, and Alyssa, 2) when she felt like she needed to pull over.

“Got out of the car, went to the other side in the grass and literally had a baby. It was so quick! I only thought these things happened in movies! I then proceeded to drive to the house with him still attached where my midwives arrived about 10 minutes later. And then we had to pick the grass off him.

“I’m still in shock that I delivered my own baby on the side of the road. But he is perfect, all of the kids are happy to have him here, and today was a day I will never forget.

“My husband is not too happy about missing it but at least he was on the phone with me when I called to say, ‘I’m going to have a baby on the side of the road,’ and 5 seconds later he came out.”

Heather says when started driving she was only having light contractions, and given her other births had taken around eight hours, she wasn’t concerned.

“I was literally just out in the barn feeding horses 20 minutes before he came out. It was that fast.
And no, he still doesn’t have a name. Have to keep that tradition alive! Although Austin wants to nickname him The Flash!”

Heather told TODAY that they’re considering naming him Porter or Wolf – after the street names near where he was birthed.

  • I wonder how far the hospital was? Although if the midwife arrived 10 minutes later it couldn’t have been too far. I probably would have waited for an ambulance rather than drive home but then again she needed yo get her other kids home.

  • That was quick and I’m so happy there were no complications. I think this is one birth that your whole family will never forget. He’ll probably grow up to be a kid who loves playing outside and getting dirty. Congratulations on your adorable son and those other beautiful children of yours.

  • Hospital is definitely my preferred place of birth that’s for sure! I wonder what her other children were thinking at the time. I definitely would not have driven home afterwards and I would have put the baby in the car seat before I drove anywhere. Glad it all worked out for the mum and baby!

    • Yeah I asked myself the same question. Wonder what the kids were thinking and their faces at the time. They must be confused

  • Well done but I definitely wouldn’t have been driving with the baby loose in the car like that. A cool and calm mother.

  • Amazing indeed ! I wonder if her driving back home with the baby still attached and all the kids in the car was so smart and safe ?

    • I wouldn’t have driven with the baby not safely restrained. But well done to her for staying so calm! I wish my labor was that quick, mine was a horrible 40 hours

  • Well this mother is one cool customer – obviously very capable and doesn’t get fazed easily. Good luck to her and her family.
