British TV presenter Saira Khan was criticised for sharing photos of her children on social media…

British TV presenter and Loose Women panellist Saira Khan has been labelled ‘creepy’ for sharing photos of her children online without their permission. Fellow panellist Janet Street-Porter said that Saira is putting her children at risk by failing to consider where pictures of them posted to social media might end up…

Protecting Privacy

Janet said that the public nature of Saira’s social media accounts means that she is unable to monitor who has access to the photos of her children. “I feel really strongly that in posting pictures of children before the age of consent, before they are able to control their lives, you have stolen their childhood,” she told Saira. “You feel it’s perfectly ok to tell the world, people you’ve never met, about your children’s lives.” Saira said that she doesn’t like to lead her life viewing the world as a constant source of threat for her children, but Janet disagreed. “With all the furore at the moment about grooming and the way images are used on social media, I wouldn’t object if you were doing it through Facebook or a closed circuit, but you’re putting it out there to people you don’t know…I just find it a bit creepy.”

A Difficult Issue

Despite criticising Saira for her decision to share her children on social media, Janet was quick to admit she is a “fantastic mum” who is simply trying to navigate a difficult issue. The rest of the panel was divided, with This Morning host Ruth Langsford agreeing that children whose pictures are shared online lose their privacy, and fellow panellist Colleen Nolan backing Saira’s decision to do what she feels is right for her family.

Choosing to share pictures of your children on social media isn’t always a clear-cut decision and we think every family has to consider what is right for them. That being said, it’s always worthwhile remembering that once you share an image online, it no longer belongs to you…

  • I used to post lots of photos of my kids when then were little as we have lots of family overseas, but as they are getting older, I have posted less
I think it’s a personal decision on whether you do or don’t

  • I post unless asked not to

  • I used to share with out thought until my 9 year old asked me not to post pics of her as she didnt want people seeing them who she didnt know. Fair enough I thought.

  • It’s a personal choice and no one should come under scrutiny.

  • I post pics of my son online and personally don’t see the big deal with this. I have friends and family overseas and this is a way they can feel like they can interact with my son

  • Everyone has an opinion on sharing pictures on social media. I personally don’t like it – your kids will grow up and may not like the images you’ve shared. My mum used to have a photo of me in her wallet she showed everyone and I HATED it. She thought it was cute and adorable and I thought I looked silly and gawky. Imagine if she’d had social media all those years ago.

  • There are arguments for both sides

  • I don’t think it’s ok to label her creepy just because she shares pictures of her children on social media, there are many people who do so. Are they all creeps ? Or is this world with so many parenting polices and judgemental behaviour creepy ?

  • It is up to each individual but if the kids are old enough and ask you not to I think you should respect that.

  • I post pics of my kids but they have a choice wither they want it up or not and I have to respect that.

  • many people post their kids on social media. I do with my kids – and they know it as well. I don’t see what the big deal is.

  • I post pictures of my daughter on social media, but my privacy settings are very high and only my friends can see them. And I have a limited amount of friends.

  • What the hell? What a peculiar thing for people to have a go at her about! As long as they aren’t naked photos who cares.

  • she is being targeted a bit

  • It’s her choice – i personally share only to a small group
