A woman in China has been praised for breastfeeding an abandoned baby on the street.

The People’s Daily Online reports, the infant was heard crying in a storage box on the side of the road in Xianyang, a city in northwestern China’s Shaaxi Province.

A number of people tried to help the baby, with one shielding its eyes from the sun while others went to fetch water.

But it wasn’t until a 26-year-old woman mother, took the baby in her arms to breastfeed the infant, that it stopped crying.

The infant, who appeared to only be three or four days old, was found wrapped in a blanket along with half a bag of formula and $20 in the box.

The baby was taken in by social workers who believe the infant might have cerebral palsy and other conditions.

Roughly 100,000 Chinese newborns are abandoned by their parents each year. Nearly all the abandoned babies have disabilities or diseases.
