A very wise person once said cleaning with children in the house is like trying to brush your teeth while eating Oreos, and we wholeheartedly agree! Mouths of Mums member Emmeline Goldsmith knows exactly what it’s like trying to keep a home clean while raising little humans. And while she doesn’t claim to have it all together (who does?!) she has a bank of handy cleaning tips she thinks other mums will love.

And that includes using a very clever new mop to tackle a bunch of jobs without so much as raising a sweat.

With two gorgeous boys, Jack and Henry aged five and seven, Emmeline admits she’s had to make peace with the fact that a perfectly clean house isn’t really a thing anymore.

“On the whole, we are definitely clean people,” she explained. “I think I like to tidy up but if it’s getting ready for school and it’s breakfast time and stuff, I’ll just let it all go, and then when they get school, or whenever there’s a chance, I’ll tidy up after so I don’t sort of try and do it all in one go, because it’s too much.”

With that in mind, Emmeline likes to employ tips that help cut down cleaning time, including:

  • Ice cubes in the dryer: Emmeline says all it takes is a few ice cubes tossed into the dryer and you can kiss the iron goodbye. “It acts like a steamer, and then it just gets rid of any wrinkles or creases really, really quickly. So that works very well. I was very surprised with that.”
  • Hairdryer on stickers: If you’ve ever wrestled with a sticky label on a jar or folder, try this: heat it up with a hairdryer to melt the glue. “It just peels right off.”
  • Toilet cleaner in the toilet brush holder: A quick way to keep toilet brushes sanitised and smelling fresh.
  • Cloth on a skewer: Perfect for getting into tight spots, like around the stovetop.
  • Essential oils in the dryer filter: “I’ve done this since the boys were babies. It just makes their clothes smell amazing.”
  • A mop that does more than one job: We sent Emmeline the Vileda H2PRO Flat Mop to try out, and she found a bunch of different uses for this innovative cleaning tool. “This makes it really quick and easy.”

The Vileda H2PRO Flat Mop is the first vertical flat mop to have 100% separation of clean and dirty water through a dual tank system. It’s compact yet powerful with water jets to provide always clean water.

The advanced microfibre is designed for stubborn dirt removal, and to get into all of those tricky corners and hard-to-reach spots.

“It’s just so compact and small, easy to store because it is quite little and easy. You can just throw the pad in the wash, and it’s great because the clean and the dirty water are separate. So it just stays nice and clean, and the jets that spray on it spray clean water onto it. And yeah, it’s great.”

Emmeline has been using the mop for those everyday spills that come with raising kids, but she’s also found a few other uses.

“I’ve used it just on skirting boards, if I’m cleaning the floor, just to go out a little bit, or I did actually use it on our deck. We’ve got a deck outside, and it’s a covered area. And I used it on the ceiling there, and it was quite great, because it, when you use it, there’s not too much water on the pad, so you can just, just use it to wipe off dust.”

While the busy mum-of-two admits mopping isn’t her favourite job, the H2PRO has made it monumentally more bareable!

“I think it’s the best mop I have used. I probably tried, I’d say maybe three different types, but this is compact and easy and quick. My husband likes it too. I would definitely recommend it because it is so, so convenient and it’s not a hassle.”

The Vileda H2PRO is available from Bunnings.

This Real Story was provided as part of a paid sponsorship opportunity. Emmeline was chosen to share her story because she was sent out and tried the Vileda H2PRO and genuinely loved it!

  • I like the idea of a hairdryer to help peel off sticky labels or price tags. This is such a pain if it’s going to damage the thing under it – so I’ll definitely be trying out this tip, and probably sometime soon. Thanks, it’s always useful to get quick ideas like this.

  • I am a fan of products that can be easily stored and can also be used for multiple purposes. I am not keen on keeping too many cleaning products and devices in the house and the less the better. It is better for the environment and for space in the house.

  • I have to admit they are some pretty great tips. I’m all for saving time! I’ve used the drier to “iron” my clothes before but I’ve never tried the icecubes! and I’ll definitely be adding some essential oils to the drier filter as well. Nice and natural, no nasties. What’s not to love?

  • Wow, I really love those cleaning tips! They are amazing and I am definitely going to try a few because I have never heard of them previously! The ice cube in the dryer one is a definitely try for me because there are some things like sheets that I avoid drying because they always come out all wrinkly!

  • There are some really interesting tips there. I am keen to try the ice cubes in the dryer, it sounds too easy. We can all use some tips to simplify all our day to day chores so they’re not so much of a chore. I’m going to take note of a few here.

  • I love all of Emmeline’s little cleaning hacks! Will definitely have to give them a go. The mop sounds so ideal. I have been having difficulty with keeping the floors clean and it isn’t ideal as my 10 month old daughter is having n her crawling phase and therefore her clothes act as the mop! I would love to trial this mop and see if it will help!

  • I think the Vileda H2PRO would be super handy for cleaning walls! I love that it has been tried & tested on a ceiling because looking at my patio roof has really been bugging me. Those are two areas I would use it in my whole house if need be, but for me it seems like the cleanest, easiest solution for mopping my upstairs bathroom floors. I have a Dyson mop which I think was worth every cent when it comes to cleaning downstairs but lugging it upstairs is something I’d pay to avoid

  • Every week I’m ironing a bunch of shirts and pants for my husband so I’m *very* keen to give the ice cubes in the dryer hack a try! Anything to get me out of even just one shirt, I’ll take it! I’ve heard and read such great things about this mop, I might have to get one myself
