Hello!

We have possibly all been there, in our past.  You are 13.  Your shopping for your high school dance, trying to find that perfect dress.

Your mum is helping you and suggests trying on a more ‘grown up’ dress than you are used to.  After hesitating you decide to make your mum very happy and try on the dress, even stopping to pose for a photo for her in the grown up dress.

Now enter this happy scene – the sales assistant.  Without even thinking this lady tells you that you need constrictive underwear (aka Spanx) to hold you in to wear the dress at all….

This is what happened to Megan Naramore Harris’ daughter, Lexi in a shop in Kansas.  Mum Megan, is not not one to sit back and allow this kind of body-shaming. Not only did she confront the sales assistant about the statement face-to-face, she also took to Facebook that night to break down how terrible the woman’s statement was in a post that’s now gone viral.

The message resonated with many; the post has been liked more than 300,000 times and has ben shared more than 50,000 times.

“I hope this is shared and gets back to you so that you should not say something like that to a girl ever again,” Megan wrote. “You never know what negative or positive thoughts they are thinking about themselves.”

  • so true and good of her mother to speak out.

  • Her daughter looks quite lovely – you can see a “bump” or two, but gee, you have to be trying VERY hard. Quite ridiculous o suggest she needs Spanx.

  • We live in a shallow world.

  • She looks gorgeous and happy. Mother has done a fantastic job. I hope the sales assistant reads it and thinks about it before she says things to other girls. Words can do alot of damage

  • Way to go, Mum! Absolutely spot on. I hope the saleswoman read it and keeps her damaging opinions to herself from now on.

  • Best not to mess with mums! Good on her for defending her daughter and girls and women.

  • Wow! That is absolutely disgusting and unbelievable! I’m so glad the Mum took action against this ridiculous and very thoughtless person!

  • I wonder if she was a shop assistant or one of the owners.
I am a little surprised the Mum didn’t ask to speak to the Manager. She probably never thought of it at the time but wished she had afterwards.

  • Go mumma. Well done. That sales person should not have a job

  • Good on her, go Mum! There is enough our kids have to deal without, shop assistants making them worry about their body type.

  • very rude indeed! the assistant probably was just thinking sales and not actual real offence but still, that is crossing the line.

  • Some people are just so incredibly judgemental and rude and need to learn to mind their own business.

  • I can totally understand the mother’s concern. It is often a throw away line that can get into a person’s head and wreak havoc. The sales person should only offer advice when it is requested.

  • I am glad to hear that the daughter had the confidence to say to the sales assistant that she didn’t need Spanx or other brands of control underwear. I am also glad that the mother stood up for her daughter.
