Rebecca Harreman has been attacked by anti-vaxxers since sharing a video of her son suffering with whooping cough.

Yesterday we shared her video to help raise awareness of the horrible condition. Rebecca has since spoke of the ongoing attacks she has received via Facebook.

Rebecca wrote on Facebook:

…and the haters are rolling in…

Wow. I can’t believe how much attention my post has gotten. While I’m completely overwhelmed with messages of love and support from strangers and friends, I really didn’t think that people would personally message me to tell me I am wrong.

I didn’t intend to offend anyone in particular with my views. Because they are just that – MY views.

But since some anti-vaxxers seem to feel they can share and say anything they want, even if it is unreliable, and I’m not allowed to have my say or share my own personal experience… well then I say bring it! No more turning a blind eye and not sharing opinions for fear it will upset someone else. It’s called freedom of speech. If they can say what they want, then so can I.

…and one would think you wouldn’t want to upset a mumma bear when her baby is hurting bad

She followed up with another post this morning sharing that her baby boy was back in hospital and the ongoing attacks were getting out of hand…

Okay this is getting out of hand.

I truly appreciate all the messages of love and support and well wishes from strangers all over the world. It’s incredible and truly meant a lot. I also appreciate all the questions coming in for those people fence sitting on whether or not to vaccinate. There are literally hundreds of them coming in. But I unfortunately don’t have time to respond to everyone’s messages, even though I’d really love to.

Because as of this moment Austin is back in hospital and my inbox is packed to the brim, people are reporting my family portrait for nudity on FB and let’s not even start on what the anti-vaxxers are sending me.

So I’m making this post another public one just to say thankyou and it’s time for me to go private so I can just concentrate on my family, my son and his health.

Yesterday we tried to contact Rebecca, but respect her need for privacy to avoid the ongoing abuse.

Queensland Health have issued an alert for Whooping Cough outbreak. Please make sure you are aware of the signs and risks to young infants.

  • Why people have to spend their time being nasty is beyond me.

  • I say each to their own, I do vaccinate my kids.
my oldest just got her 4 year old needle and she did have a reaction this time, I was confused because she has had the vaccine before when she was younger but she ended up with a swollen welt on her arm at the injection site about the size of the palm of my hand and as the days go on the redness has spread with gravity and gone down her arm about 4cm past the edge of the swollen lump.
I did end up taking her to the hospital and it was a mild infection, but I think I’d rather know that I might be able to stop my child from getting a horrible illness where she would be uncomfortable, sore, itchy, feverish and could possibly die if not treated right.
doctors don’t always get it right the first time and we’ll you never know it could have been the life saving decision.
with the vaccines they have been tested before giving them to kids and if it has a mild side affect that’s okay if it means it could stop things before it happens.
you never just know things could always take a turn for the worse when you get ilp

  • I can’t even begin to understand how Rebecca is coping with the nasty degrading comments some people have made ? Hopefully there are no more in the inbox. Maybe she should log in, then get somebody trustworthy to read them and delete the nasty ones. You don’t need the extra stress and heartbreak in your life., nor doe you want your very ill baby to pick up on your body language. Some nasty comments may even be reportable to the Communications Onbudsman or suitable authority. The Police would probably like to research the origin of some of them if they are deflamatory. Rebecca if you need counselling please seek it. Don’t let them destroy your life. I hope your beautiful baby makes a quick full recovery.

  • Wow each to their own as it is such a powerful subject. We all need to remember we all are different and want and give our children different things

  • She should be able to share her story without being attacked online

  • A friend of mines child has just had whooping cough fortunately she DID have the vaccine so she would have been worse if she didn’t but you wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I really hope Rebecca’s son starts to make a quick recovery.

  • Go Rebecca! I hope that if I’m ever in a similar situation then I manage to be even as half as brilliant as her!

  • Poor baby. I hope he will recover completely.

  • It’s indeed sad that people feel to start an argument about whether to vaccinate or not with a mum with a very sick child. So sorry for this mum/family and their child that they have to go through this. They made the right decision to go private

  • This poor lady and baby. Unless the anti vaccers have a medical reason their child can’t ‘ve vaccinated, they should keep vaccinate their kids.

  • How on earth can anybody be mean and nasty at a time like this. What is wrong with people. This is the absolutely perfect scenario for why children and adults need to be vaccinated for whooping cough. The Anti-Vaxxers should hide in shame and pray that their children never experience something so horrible.

  • Vaccinations are so important. It’s just awful hearing of stories like this. I would have been so upset if mine had become sick from unvaccinated others. Whooping Cough is such an awful thing _ I remember hearing it in a sick child who lived near us as a child. Sincere sympathy for this family.
