The Facebook post on Queensland Health page states:

An increased number of whooping cough (Pertussis) cases have been recently diagnosed in the greater Brisbane area, with a number of babies afflicted with the disease.

Metro South Health public health physician Dr Kari Jarvinen says the number of whooping cough cases in the Brisbane area has been relatively low for the past year or two, so this increase is particularly concerning.

Dr Jarvinen says vaccination is the ONLY effective way to minimise the risk of whooping cough, with most hospitalisations and deaths occurring in babies less than six months old.

He recommends all people in contact with small children be up-to-date with their vaccination or risk passing it on.

Unlike most vaccine-preventable diseases, immunity to whooping cough is not lifelong, and starts to wane in the years following the disease or after having the vaccination.

The harsh truth of Whooping cough

Rebecca Harreman knows all too well the affects of whooping cough on young infants. She shared a video to her own Facebook page over the weekend of her precious baby boy struggling with whooping cough. To hear it breaks your heart, but it highlights even more the need to protect our precious new babies.

Okay so I know I said I’d let the hate go. But I’m tired. Damn tired. I’ve been on duty for over 3 weeks having to wake every single time my baby boy coughs for fear he will stop breathing. Every. Single. Time. I cannot and will not pass that duty to anyone else, because I just can’t sleep.

So for those of you sitting on the fence on whether to vaccinate yourself and your kids or not… maybe this video will convince you.

This is a GOOD coughing fit in a 4 month old with Pertussis, or Whooping Cough – 23 days after his cough started which is when it’s supposed to be getting past the bad stage. It lasts for up to 100 days, but a simple cold I passed onto him that I caught from being with him in hospital is making him relapse again frown emoticon

Now when I say this is good… I mean that’s absolutely nothing. Not even long enough to be called a coughing fit. Nothing compared to watching him turn blue from coughing for so long and so much he can’t take a single breath…

Imagine that in a tiny newborn baby. Can you imagine?! The doctors said he has his age and size and his first vaccination on his side to be able to fight this because there is no real way to treat it – you can only try and get some oxygen in them – that is if they breathe it in… and they have to do that all on their own.

I don’t care whether you want to try and prove to me that vaccinations and herd immunities don’t work. I don’t care that vaccinations have side effects, because every person in this world reacts differently to all types of food, products and medicines. I could not care less, even if it is ever proven one day that they don’t work.

You know why? Because at least at the end of the day I tried to do something to prevent this and not sit there and say “oh well, vaccinations don’t work so I’ll just sit here and do nothing”… because doing nothing goes against every cell in my body as a mother. Doing nothing is just wrong.

So please share this and spread some awareness… not nonsense. This is getting worse because people are not vaccinating!

Oh, and no matter what you believe – if you have a cough while out in public – cover your damn effing mouth!!!

~End Rant~

  • My husband and two of our children had whooping cough two years ago. We were lucky that their vaccinations and age helped protect them – it was a lot, lot less severe than it could have been – but it still lasted months. It was heartbreaking watching the three of them suffering, lying exhausted and waiting for the next bout. At the same time, I needed to care for our other two children, and keep them separated as much as possible. The doctor gave me a booster injection because I have an autoimmune disease, and being so close to them every day was too much of a risk. I have always strongly supported immunisations, and now share our story to urge others to immunise too.

  • This is just one reason why some parents are reluctant to tkae their babies out in public more than absolutely necessary. But Mum needs to get out of 4 walls. Grandparents and anybody who may be constant contact with another child or adult regardless of age should make sure they don’t catch it and pass it on to others. I am not sure how long vaccinations are effective for. I do know that some years ago some batches of vaccination were not as good as they should have been. If your visitors or anywhere you visit have not been vaccinated do not allow them to touch your baby at all. The problem is that it is airborne

  • I just wish people would have their children vaccinated

  • I truly hope people realise that vaccination programs are there to protect the community as a whole, including vulnerable people. and not just themselves and their families.

  • My kids were vaccinated. And I have never come across whooping cough in my whole 48yrs. Better off being safe I think. Vaccinations are there for a reason.

  • Seriously, it’s stories like this that make me angry when people don’t vaccinate. Especially against Whoopibg cough. It’s so important to remind anyone who is going to be close to a newborn to vaccinate.

  • I work in Healthcare and we are seeing far too much Pertussis infections killing our infants.

  • Dear lady
It is heartbreaking to see your child in this condition. My heart is for you and I will pray for your little one for healing. I know what this is like even though I cannot remember, because my mother told me that I almost died from whooping cough when I was a baby. I had problems like your little one, but thanks be to God, I am here today and writing this to you. I want to encourage you to stay as positive as you possibly can, trust and believe because I believe your little one will pull through. It is difficult to see your child in this condition but keep on encouraging your little one in strength. God bless you and your bub. Make the LORD watch over all of you and bring healing in every situation. Amen.

  • yes this is so sad! the effect that a cough can have and passing on germs! such a shame!

  • oh so heartbreaking – it’s one thing to not get vaccinated but another to go and spread things that people try hard to prevent their little ones from getting by getting them vaccinated – if your sick stay home, dont spread your unwanted germs -

  • I hope medical scientists are working on a vaccine that can be given to newborns as soon as they are born.

    • Now that really would be amazing.

  • It’s so important to vaccinate

  • Wishing your little one a speedy recovery. Breaks your heart having a child that is so sick. Hope people learn from your post how bad whopping cough can be.

  • Exactly. Vaccinate your child(ren)! How can it not be a form of child abuse to just let your child(ren) get sick from preventable diseases, such as whopping cough…

  • Vaccinations are so important. In particular against whooping cough. Thanks for sharing!
