Hello!

Happy wife; happy life. You know how the saying goes. And yes, it’s almost always true. Except maybe in this case. A husband is torn after his pregnant wife picks 2020’s most unpopular name for their new baby.

The man shared his struggles on Reddit, where he revealed that his wife’s top baby name choice was none other than ‘Karen’.

Shock; Horror!

This name may have been super popular last century, but now it’s a well-used pseudonym for any woman who gives off a disapproving, entitled or demanding vibe.

It’s A Meme NOT A Name

The poor husband was understandably worried that their daughter would be the butt of millions of memes, should she be ‘cursed’ with this unpopular name.

The man wrote: “My wife and I recently found out we’re having a daughter. We hadn’t really talked about names before but we both agreed that each of us will retain veto power.”

“When we did start discussing names, both of us wanted to name her after our late mothers.

“Her mum’s name was Karen and my mum’s name wasn’t a meme.

I Call Veto!!!

“I told her the baby can take my mum’s name as her first name and her mum’s name as a middle name, or have an entirely different name, but I can’t okay ‘Karen’ as a first name in any case.

The man continued to explain that his wife “got offended because she just wants to honour her mother and thinks I have a problem with that.”

“I just don’t want to set our daughter up to be bullied throughout her life. I told her I’d be fine with whatever first name she picks as long as it doesn’t lead to the baby being picked on later in life, but she’s pretty insistent on Karen.”

Don’t Do It!

Most of the responses were sympathetic to the husband and urged him to hold his ground.

“Stick to your guns and don’t name her Karen,” said one.

“People are going to make jokes all her life,” added another.

“People intentionally shouldn’t be naming their kids something they know will cause bullying and antagonism …. why would you ever want to disadvantage your child?”

No Biggie

But others dismissed his concerns saying that by the time the child grows up, the name Karen “likely won’t be a meme.”

How It All Ended…

The husband updated his post after yet another conversation with his wife, who’s mum had passed away when she was only 14 and had never considered that a meme might be a “potential obstacle” when naming their child.

The couple brainstormed new names and eventually reached a compromise.

“While exchanging ideas, we realised that both our mothers very coincidentally had the exact same middle name, Elizabeth (well mine had two middle names, and Elizabeth was one of them, but still). It seemed completely perfect to both of us so we’re going with it,” he wrote.

  • Elizabeth is lovely.
Karen is not a name that has ever appealed to me as a name for one of my girls. We are all different and all have different choices….thank goodness. But I would never give my child a name that was going to be 100% a name to be teased over.

  • Hubby doesn’t like “common” names so Karen would definitely be off the list!

  • The child has to live with it not them

  • I wouldn’t name my child Karen and glad they settled on Elizabeth, it’s a lovely name.

  • No I wouldn’t name my child Karen. I don’t even like the name apart from the jokes she would become the brunt of. Some of my friends have chosen some unusual names for their babies but they all grow into them eventually

  • That’s pretty funny! A good reminder her whole life that she was born in coronavirus year.

  • They could always use Karen as a middle name. Elizabeth was a good compromise and has some sentimental meaning too.

  • I’m glad they have been able to compromise on a name for their daughter. Although I can’t see a problem with the name Karen that’s probably because living in a rural area no one thinks about meme’s. We actually have 3 Karen’s in our area and they are all as different as chalk and cheese.

  • See! It’s all about communication, discussion and compromise. What could have blown up terribly, has now been sorted.

  • Elizabeth is a very nice name. Karen is so sentimental though, i wouldn’t care too much about memes and what other people think.

  • I wouldn’t name my kid Karen it’s just setting her up for jokes forever

  • Karen will die down eventually.

  • Karen and Elizabeth are both sweet names. Fashions and moods change, and there are worse names and associations. Very unusual and dfferent spellings can be more difficult, but depending on the child’s personality, none of this might even remotely matter. Choose what you like and makes you and your family happy.

  • It’s important for both parents to agree on the name. Great they found a good compromise !
