A nine-year-old boy is in a QLD hospital suffering a suspected drug overdose.

The young boy was sent home from school unwell and given a dose of what his mother believed was cough medicine before he became seriously ill. An ambulance was called and the boy was rushed to hospital.

Medical tests have since revealed the medicine may have contained a suspect illegal substance.

He is thankfully in a stable condition.

Police are testing the substance to determine what exactly it was.
