Jetstar is now charging passengers to travel with babies on their laps for domestic and international flights.

Parents will have to pay $30 for one-way journey on domestic flights and $50 on international flights.

Children under two years old and not requiring a seat were previously allowed to travel for free on domestic flights within Australia and New Zealand, and on international flights between Australia and New Zealand.

Their website notes:
“If you’re travelling with your infant on your lap, you’ll pay an infant fee on all flights except New Zealand and Japan domestic flights, and flights to and from Cook Islands. On all flights where you’re travelling with an infant or small child, you can bring a pram, stroller, portable cot and highchair as checked baggage for free, and you also won’t be charged the oversized item fee for any of these items.”

  • That is just disgusting. If they are going to do that then Mum should get to pay $30 less for her seat since she is sharing it. Fairs fair

  • This is just ludicrous. They are not even using up a seat for goodness sake.

  • I’ve heard this before – it is so wrong! They are not taking up an extra seat, in fact I’ve done this before with my kids as babies and it actually makes things extremely uncomfortable for the mother having them on her lap and now they are wanting to charge extra for the ‘privilege’.

  • Oh please, every other airline charges a % of the ticket price, much more then $30 or $50. Stop complaining

  • If you can take the child’s things without paying extra or having to add to your luggage. So this means the carry ons for children does not count as your’s.

  • This is just gouging. They charge for EVERYTHING.

  • I think it’s reasonable, maybe call it something else though. We are expected to pay extra to have checked luggage, so why not a fee considering you’re probably checking in multiple large and potentially heavy items (pram, baby seat/carrier, portable cot). Once they’re over 2 we are charged for their seat but also luggage, so yes I think it’s fair

  • you get an extra belt to loop through your own. maybe the child should have their own space as well, especially if you are paying for it

  • I recently flew on the same plane as a family with a baby. The stewardess spoke to the Mum and they alterred the harness to harness the baby against the Mother. I don’t know how it was fitted but the stewardess came up the aisle with an extra piece of seat harness strap.

  • Yeah, I think it’s reasonable. It’s of course nice when a child/baby goes for free, but it’s still a person which at some circumstances may attention of the staff.

  • This is just more gouging from airlines.

  • If you can take a pram and stash a baby bag as extra carry on then its probably fair enough.

  • I don’t think this is fair at all!
