A Queensland mum has died after suffering complications from a caesarean section while delivering her first child.

Amanda Sheppard was undergoing an elective caesarean at Rockhamption Base Hospital when something went wrong.

With beloved husband Glynn by her side, Amanda – who had been eagerly anticipating the birth of her first baby for months – tragically died. The Courier Mail reports she suffered an embolism.

Doctors managed to save the baby, a “gorgeous little girl” named Willa.

“This day was supposed to be one of the best and happiest days of their lives and instead she has now left her beloved husband and brand new baby girl behind,” a family friend wrote on a Go Fund Me page created to help Glynn and Willa.

“They would have been filled full of happiness & excitement to meet their first child.”

Amanda’s death will be investigated by the coroner.

Our sympathy and prayers to the family. So very sad.

  • We all tend to think that C sections are simple and no big deal but infact they are classed as a major surgery and anytime you have a surgery you are at risk :(

  • How tragic. Her first child, & she never got a chance to enjoy the wonders of motherhood. Lots of love to her family. She is hopefully now in a better place.

  • My deepest condolences to this family. I know this is one of the risks they warn you about before surgery, but on such a happy occasion, you never think it will. I hope Willa grows up knowing how much love her mum had waiting for her to arrive.

  • Oh no, this is so sad. I wish her family all the best in trying to deal with this. The expectations they would have had for their new life as a family, and now this. Such a tragic situation.

  • How utterly devastating. It’s hard to fathom that mothers can die in childbirth in today’s age of technology.

We hope you are resting in peace Amanda knowing your family love you Our hearts go out to Glynn and Willa xxoo

  • This is such a tragedy. There would have been a valid reason for a Caesarean Section. We don’t know the history so I cant give an opinion nor do I think it is anyone’s place to.

  • Without knowing her medical history, no one should make judgement on why she chose to birth this way.
