A teacher’s list of phrases and words banned in her classroom has divided opinions, with many claiming it’s just a ‘power trip’.
The list of 32 words and sayings, popular with school-aged children, includes ‘bruh,’ ‘that’s cap’ and ‘it’s giving’. It also details the punishment that will be dealt out to students who ignore the warning.
“If you are caught using these words, you will write a short essay explaining why you chose these words in an academic setting to express yourself,” the note, which was shared on X, reads.
“There are many ways to articulate what you need to say without using slang,” it continues. “This is an educational institution, and you will carry yourself as scholars in my classroom,” the teacher finishes.
The list has attracted thousands of comments, both supportive and against the stance.
“She’s on a power trip and and doesn’t value the language of her students,” one person commented. “She is more concerned with compliance than learning about her students, because she does not value her students’ identities.”
“So no freedom of speech…”
But others supported the teacher’s stand.
“Seems like a teacher that actually cares to me.. probably more that the parents.”
“I agree with this method (not all of the words though) and I’m not sorry. Kids don’t know when to use this language and this will teach them to think before they speak, know time and place for everything, and to respect adults.”
