Have you always wondered what the tiny pocket on your jeans was for? You’re not alone. Coins? Money? A single key? It won’t fit much will it? Most times it doesn’t get any use at all.

Levi Strauss has explained the original reason for your small pocket and it might suprise you. The pocket was originally designed as a watch pocket – for a pocket watch! It was designed for the cowboys of the 1800s to safely store their pocket watch in! The tiny pocket has outlived the pocket watch and remained part of the classic popular jean design.

The pocket has since become smaller and been called a coin pocket but doesn’t really fit many coins in! I guess the pocket is more part of the design rather than a useful pocket these days.

I’ve used the pocket to hold bobby pins, lip balm or a couple of coins but not much else will fit in there.

What do you use your ‘watch’ pocket for? Please leave your comment below.

  • How cool! I like to fold up a ten dollar note and shove it in there in case I need it but don’t have my wallet!

  • I know a lot of men who use it for loose change. I don’t think Aust. men would have put their pocket watches in those small pockets. I would think that probably started as an American or British custom. That’s an usual place to carry sunglasses too.
