This year, the award for Michael Jackson’s Video Vanguard Award went to Pink, and her amazing speech needs to be heard by one and all.

Pink accepted her award and dedicated her speech to body positivity and her daughter, Willow.

“Recently, I was driving my daughter to school and she said to me, out of the blue, ‘Mama, I’m the ugliest girl I know.’

“And I said, ‘HUH?!’

“And she said, ‘Yeah, I look like a boy with long hair.’

“And my brain went to, ‘OMG who said this? Can I kick a six-year-old’s ass?’…

“But I didn’t say anything and instead I went home and I made a Powerpoint presentation for her and in that presentation were androgynous rockstars and artists, that live their truth, are probably made fun of every day of their life, but carry on and wave their flag and inspire the rest of us…

“These are artists like Michael Jackson, and David Bowie, and Freddie Mercury…

“But then I said… ‘Well, what do you think I look like?’

“And she said, ‘Well, you’re beautiful!’

“But when people make fun of me, that’s what they use – they say that I look like a boy, or that I’m too masculine, or I have too many opinions, or my body’s too strong.

“And I said to her, ‘Do you see me growing my hair?’ She said, ‘No, Mama.’

“I said, ‘Do you see me changing my body?’ ‘No, Mama.’

“‘Do you see me changing the way I present myself to the world?’ ‘No, Mama.’

“‘Do you see me selling our arenas all over the world?’ ‘Yes, Mama.’

“So, baby girl, we don’t change. We take the gravel and the shell and we make a pearl, and we help other people to change, so that they can see more kinds of beauty.

She added, “and YOU my darling girl are beautiful!”

  • We were taught that physical appearance isn’t what matters most, it’s how we feel within ourselves, interact with others and “treat” them as you want to be “treated”.

  • wow what a great role model she is for her child. That is great how she sorted it out and made her daughter feel better. What a great moral story to share with everyone. Pink is so humble and it seems that she will be passing that quality on to willow

  • Unfortunately some kids are physically more “beautiful” than others, and they know that early. But most are beautiful when you look at the whole person. (I except people like the bully who made my kids’ life hell.)

  • Such a great role model and I hate to follow celebrities but I’ll make an exception for her.

  • It is beautiful to hear the words that Pink spoke of to her daughter and the examples of herself she used to ask her Willow questions so that she may be able to understand why we should never change ourselves for other people.
