Mum shares heartbreaking story of explaining to her toddler that his baby brother can’t come back to them.

Remember the story a couple of months ago from Sheryl Blanksby who was amazed by her toddler when she walked into the room to hear him telling his baby brother, ‘Big brother is here, everything is okay,’ as he gently rested a hand on the baby’s cheek.

Three-year-old William was doing his best to comfort his baby brother Thomas, who was battling terminal cancer at just four months old.

Mrs Blanksy, from Western Australia, shared the photo on Instagram with a caption explaining how she had expected to walk into the room to find her sons getting into trouble. Instead she was greeted with this precious scene, shares Daily Mail.

It is one of a number of touching online updates shared by Mrs Blanksy and her husband Jon as they fight to make the most of every moment they have with their baby boy.

“I was getting ready in the bathroom and husband was in the kitchen. The kids were quiet, especially Mr preschooler. You know the rules about when kids are quiet. I tiptoed to the lounge with my camera ready to catch anything they are doing. I was expecting my baby to be covered in Nutella or something but instead I saw this. My preschooler is telling his baby brother “Kuya (big brother) is here. Everything is ok”

Thomas, who passed away at 23 weeks old, was born with a skin lesion on his right arm that looked like a birthmark.

Thomas was diagnosed with a malignant rhabdoid tumour and his family had no idea how long he had.

‘There are tears and that immense pain of losing someone you love so much. We film him constantly and stare at him and kiss him,’ the couple told Daily Mail Australia in March.

‘We as a family are trying to cope the best way we can, but it has been very hard.’

Mum, Sheryl, also shared a photo of herself recently reaching out through her pain and tears, “I can’t stop the tears today. How do you stop them anyway? Why do I even share it on social media? I don’t know but I do know that I want to remember this moment in a photo. Before giving birth to Thomas, I worried about not having enough love to give since I love my first born so much. Turns out a mother’s love is abound and limitless. These tears are all love and pain, a whole lot of it for my Thomas. This is real life. I am sorry.”

Update 10 May

Sheryl posted the sad news on Instagram, “It is with immense sadness that we share, our #littlewarriorthomas grew his angel wings yesterday night, 8th of May 2017 at 7:30pm.

In an  Instagram story of her and William, you can hear her try to explain that Thomas can’t come back.

“Thomas is going to miss me,” William tells his mum.

Sheryl explains that baby Thomas misses them all as much as they miss him, adding that he just needs to look at the sky.

The little boy then asks if Thomas will come back when it’s raining?

Sheryl replies, maybe that is Thomas saying hello.

As a light drizzle begins across their garden, William and Sheryl tell Thomas they love him and miss him.

Our thoughts are with them all at this difficult time. May they find peace in all the beautiful memories they created with Thomas over the past weeks.

  • How awful. A parent should never have to bury their child. I can’t even imagine the pain they are going through right now.

  • This is so sad and heartbreaking. I love the analogy of Thomas being around when it’s raining. That’s a beautiful way of his older brother holding onto his memory and feeling he’s with them. My thoughts are with them.

  • How awful and heartbreaking! Some days I (and I know we all probably do) complain about how naughty our kids have been when we don’t know how lucky we are to just have healthy kids.
