Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes welcomed their daughter on Sept. 12.

Having kept the pregnancy secret for months, they also managed to keep their baby’s name a tightly guarded secret.

But now the little girl’s birth certificate has been lodged and we can announce her name is Esmeralda Amada.

Inspiration from Disneyland, perhaps?

The actress, 40, may have looked to her Cuban heritage for the name. A friend told People magazine, “She’s absolutely in heaven being a mom. She and Ryan are just in awe of this beautiful person they created. It’s a really special time for them.”

While they were keeping Eva’s pregnancy secret from the public and paparazzi, she retreated to her 33-year-old boyfriend’s house.

“Their lives completely changed as soon as Eva got pregnant,” says the friend. “They used to travel all over the place together and go on hikes with their dogs.”

But when she fell pregnant, “she barely left the house,” People previously reported. “Ryan has been taking care of her, picking up food and running errands. He has been very supportive of keeping things a secret.”

Little Esmeralda (Esme?) is a much-longed-for addition to their family.

“This has been a long time coming,” Eva’s friend said. “Ryan and Eva definitely discussed children before. She knows how much he wants to be a dad and he’s going to be an amazing father.”

  • I think that it is a distinctive & traditional name. I quite like the middle name Amada that they chose for her.

  • The name is very becoming and not so common nowadays. Congratulations to Ryan and Eva on this very special time in their lives. All the best in bring up this beautiful and precious gift that they have been blessed with. So happy for them. They are my favourite people!

  • The baby name is a little strange, not the 1st name but the middle one…. I don’t know about that. I’m a little jealous that he’s had a baby with someone other than me though :P

  • Lovely name. And I’m loving how they’re managing to keep everything low key and out of the media. It’s really important for them to have ‘family’ time in the early stages and they seem to have done it really well.

  • Its a name very reflective of her Cuban background & quite feminine

  • congrats to them not rapt in the name.

  • I wonder what it will get shortened to?
