Have Aussies lost the spark in the bedroom? Why half of Australian couples avoid going to bed at the same time.
A new report pulls back the covers to reveal surprising behaviours of Aussies couples in the bedroom.
New research from specialist mattress and bedding retailer, Bedshed, has revealed more than half of Aussie couples are avoiding going to bed at the same time, with many people preferring to watch TV or Netflix, rather than spending time with their significant other in the bedroom.
According to the report, nearly 200,000 Aussie couples are sleeping in separate beds. For those that share a bed, 65% of them are sleeping in a Queen Size bed, with a third of them wanting a bigger bed. But why is the distance between our pillows growing at night?
Sleep disturbance is one factor, with 52% of couples blaming their partner’s snoring for their bad night’s sleep, however the research suggests it’s our digital lives that are having the biggest impact on our bedroom bliss, replacing traditional behaviours such as ‘spooning’ and serving breakfast in bed. So, it begs the question, have Aussies lost the spark in the bedroom?
According to Gavin Culmsee, General Manager of Bedshed, “We believe the bedroom is the most important room in the house, especially for couples, which is why we decided to understand what really goes on inside Aussie bedrooms.
“We were surprised to discover that many people are purposefully avoiding spending time together in their most sacred space, but we were also intrigued by some of the weird and wonderful insights that came out of the Bedroom Report.”
Perhaps most shockingly, the report found that over 50 per cent of couples are deliberately avoiding going to bed at the same time. Perhaps we need to rethink our bedroom behaviours, shake up the sheets and spend some more quality time in our beds with our significant other?
Below are the top five trends we’re seeing going on between the sheets – or sheet, as nearly half of all Aussie’s don’t use a top sheet:
1. Less chill, more Netflix
– Netflix was the only thing coming out on top in this report, replacing traditional pillow talk as many Aussies prefer to watch TV, rather than talk to their partner in bed
– But while our couples might be talking less in bed, turns out they’re doing a lot more listening, with 66% of couples saying they pay close attention to what their partner says during their sleep
– Further to this, 22% of people claim to have gone through their partners bedside drawers – does this mean we are becoming less trusting of our better halves?
2. Toys in the bedroom
– This isn’t as fun as it sounds, with many couples preferring to spend time between the sheets on social media and playing games on their phone, rather than with each other:
– Nearly 60% of Aussie’s take their phones to bed with them, this number increases to 74% if you’re a student
– One in five of us play games on our phone before bed
– 32% of us browse social media in bed before going to sleep – jumping up to 62% if you are a young female
– 43% of couples say their phone is the last thing they look at before going to sleep
3. No spooning = no forking
– Three out of every four Aussie’s have never received breakfast in bed, yet if you sleep naked you increase your chances of getting breakfast in bed made for you
– It is not just the knife and fork that is disappearing from the bedroom, the spoon is also on the way out with too with only 14% of couples spooning in bed (this number drops off as you get older)
– While spooning should be put back on the menu in the bedroom, one thing you need to avoid is a marriage proposal, with 2 out of 5 males being turned down for proposing in bed
4. Two’s company, three’s a crowd
– Aussie couples have grown accustomed to sleeping with more than each other in their bed with one in five people sleeping with their dog or cat
– What’s even more interesting is that 25% of people who buy a king size bed do so to accommodate their pet!
– But if it’s not your animal joining you at night, then it’s probably your kids, with 19% of parents waking up with their kids in bed
5. Size matters: When it comes to your bank account
– To get ahead in the bedroom, couples need to get on top of their finances with Aussies saying that money worries keep them awake at night more than anything else
– Unsurprisingly, 13% of couples said they argue about money in bed
