A US father has died after he crashed his car while driving his pregnant wife to hospital.

Tony Schmucker, 37, had a medical episode which caused him to veer off the road and crash into an embankment.

The car, which was also carrying Mr Schmucker’s wife, Jill, and their two sons, hit a boulder and a tree before rolling over.

The family was rushed to hospital after the accident in the early hours of Wednesday January 13.

Mr Schmucker did not survive but his third son was delivered safely via emergency C-section. The children only had minor injuries.

A GoFundMe page set up to raise money for Mrs Schmucker, 35, and her children has raised US$41,000 in four days.

His brother, Aaron Schmucker, wrote on the page  …

“Thank you all so much so far for your support and prayers for Jill, Ryder, Rolie, and now Leedan.

It is amazing how much joy and sorrow can be wrapped up into one situation. Tony my brother was an awesome father, brother, and son in our family. He died trying to ensure the safe arrival of his son.

I look at his boys and think of all the things that Tony had told me he couldn’t wait to do with them like hunting, fishing, snowboarding, and many other things. Leedan, Tony’s new boy, is so cute and will be a blessing to our family.

One thing I have been thinking a lot about is that there will come a time when these boys will wonder what kind of man was my father like, what kind of impact did he make on people he knew.

Please consider writing down a special memory of what Tony was like, and what kind of man he was, in hopes that some day his sons will be able to look back with some understanding of where they came from.

Thank you again for your support. P.S.- Tony would be so proud of Ryder (his first son ) as he was able to call 911 with both of his parents unconscious in the front of the car. I truly believe with out his actions Jill and Leedan would not be here today.”

Our hearts and prayers are with the family at this sad time.

  • Such a tragedy. Leed an will never know his Dad. Knowing that his Dad died on his birthday will be with him forever. One wonders what impact that may have on his life later.
May the Mum and their sons have plenty of support for as long as they need it. People tend to forget after a few months that those left behind still need emotional support. The cricumstances will have more impact than otherwise it may have had

May in time they heal and look back and celebrate all the things that were/are wonderful about their dad, a husband and a friend.
