Every birth is incredible and unique, but this twin birth was out-of-this-world amazing – with one precious little girl born not only breech, but en caul.
The images are a rare glimpse into the secret world of the womb.
The photos, shared by The Bump Birthing Center in the US, show the rare moment a twin girl is born with her amniotic sac completely intact – which is known as an en caul birth.
Twins Amari and Emory were born on July 30, 2022, weighing in at 6pd 1oz and 5pd 2oz, with Emory presenting breech and delivered en caul.
“What makes this even more special is that these beauties were born ON their big sisters 4th birthday,” explained The Bump Birthing Center.
What is an en caul birth?
An en caul birth is when baby is born with their amniotic sac still intact, and is thought to happen in less than 1 in 80,000 births.
The amniotic sac is baby’s home for the nine months of pregnancy and is filled with amniotic fluid. It protects baby and keeps them warm – it also helps their lungs and other organs develop as they drink their amniotic fluid.
Usually the amniotic sac ruptures as labour starts, which is when your water breaks. But sometimes labour progresses without the sac breaking, and baby is born still encased inside.
After an en caul birth the midwife or doctor will break the sac, the fluid will run out and baby will be released. Amazing!
