An ambulance was called to a home in Yanchep WA on 20, October 2016, where the children were discovered.

At the time we shared that their 35 year old father was found with serious injuries at the home in Flight Vista, Yanchep. He was rushed to Joondalup Hospital and then on to Royal Perth Hospital under police guard.

Seven News reports the bodies of two children, a 3 year old boy and a  five year old girl, where later found inside the house.

There were reports at the time that the man was stabbed but this was not confirmed by police.

Major Crime Detectives and forensic officers were at the scene overnight.

“We’re in direct contact with the mother… she’s obviously very, very distressed,” a WA police spokesman said.

“And also we’re assisting the police officers that attended – it’s quite distressing circumstances around what has happened.”

UPDATE 27 July 2017

It has been revealed the Perth father murdered his young children to make his estranged wife suffer amid a custody battle.

He has been jailed for life, with a minimum of 31 years.

Police found the bodies of five-year-old Zaraiyah-Lily Headland and three-year-old Andreas Headland on a bed at a Yanchep home on October 20 last year.

Their father Jason Craig Headland, 36, was also found lying on the floor with self-inflicted wounds.

The WA Supreme Court heard on Thursday that the cause of death could not be ascertained but the children had been drugged with a sleeping tablet and asphyxiated, reports 9 news.

The court also heard Headland’s relationship with his partner had deteriorated and he wanted to take the children away from her.

“I’m going to break your heart into 50 million little pieces,” Headland told her over the phone, adding it would be the last time she would speak to the children.

She also heard him giggle before he hung up and she went to police for help.

In a note police found at the house, Headland addressed his estranged wife saying she would have to “live with this for the rest of your life”.

Headland’s wife Anatoria said in her victim impact statement that her children were bubbly and excited to learn, describing them as her heart and soul.

“Two peas in a pod they were and polar opposites,” she said.

“They completed each other and they completed me.”

Ms Headland described her daughter as a “determined little girl” and her son as a “brave soldier”.

Justice Jenkins said Headland actions were vindictive and his note was “callous, shallow and self-centred”.

“You had a duty to love and protect them. Instead of protecting them, you used them as weapons,” she said.

“You made your children pay with their lives in order to inflict pain.”

Update 9 August

Mum, Anatoria Takiwa has made a promise to her children not to let the tragedy overcome her.

“How do you go on from this? I have no idea,” Anatoria says.

“I don’t know what to do.”

Both children had an infectious giggle and sunny personalities, which their mother can only dream about now, reports 7 news.

Jason Headland drugged their two children, with asphyxiation recorded as the official cause of death.

In the hours before he killed them, Headland made a chilling call to his partner saying he would break her heart into “50 million pieces.”

Justice Lindy Jenkins put Headland behind bars for at least 31 years.

“It was a relief,” Anatoria says. “I was just relieved it was over.”

She now sleeps with her children’s toys so part of them is always with her.

The heartbroken mum says she lives with the guilt of not protecting her children.

Despite her regrets, she is determined to make them proud.

“I know they wouldn’t want me down and depressed,” she says.

“They never saw me like that, so they wouldn’t want me to be like that now.”

  • wow that is so sad that he did this to his children. the poor mother suffers while he sits in jail thinking that he broke her. What a coward he is and i hope that he isn’t treated well in there. i hope that the mother will try to move on in any small way possible and i bet her children knew that they were loved deeply by her

  • Maybe they should drop him off on an unihabited island and let him fend for himself. Let him find whatever food he can.
We as taxpayers have to pay for prison staff to watch him, for his food, water, electricity he uses and other luxuries prisoners are allowed – he has deprived his sadly missed children of those things.

  • Anyone who can murder their own children should never be allowed out of jail. It sickens me that there is any possibility of him being released. Their mum isn’t guilty of letting them down. She was let down too because she wasn’t allowed to protect her children from such evil.

  • throw away the key and make him wear a child killer sign then let the other prisoners deal with him

  • Let’s hope he really stays behind bars for 31 years. What an animal.
And the mother.. I don’t have any idea how she will be able to cope. It’s so sad! :-(

  • I hope justice is served for this monster both in prison and in the next life. I cannot imagine the torment this lady is living with. I hope she finds peace.

  • What a sick, twisted man. No amount of jail time will bring back those two innocent children. I feel so sorry for their mother. What a torment for her.

  • I’ve heard they don’t like children killers in prison – I hope that isn’t just a myth and that he is having a hard time of it in jail – he deserves to suffer each and every day that he lives for taking those children’s lives – may their little souls rest in peace
