Pirate’s treasure was on 5-year-old Ryder Goggin’s mind when he went for a stroll on the beach – instead he uncovered a decades old mystery in a bottle.
The New York Daily News reports that Ryder was out for a walk on New Year’s Eve, which happens to also be his fifth birthday, when he found a 28-year-old message in a bottle:
“Hi my name is Chris,” the letter reads. “I am 10 years old and in the 5th grade. I live in Sacramento. Call me when you find this to let me know where it washed ashore. September 5th, 1988.”
The family excited by the discovery, Ryder’s mum, Heather Baird, rang the number, but unsurprisingly it was disconnected.
A ‘treasure hunt’ then ensued as mother and son worked together to find the owner of the message.
Researching the owners of the phone number, the family initially found that it belonged to a Cliff Farnsworth in 1981. They then found that the number belonged to another person in 1988 – however that person had died a while ago.
Speaking with The New York Daily News, Heather said, “I think it would be great to find Chris and find out where he put the bottle in the water,” she continued, “It’s a romantic story of a Sacramento child and his curiosity, now in the hands of a boy at Jug Handle Reserve in Mendocino County. I hope we find out really good things about how his life went.”
