AUSTRALIA’S biggest telecommunications provider is down across the country today, with the outage affecting all smartphones on its most popular networks, preventing phone calls coming through.

Courier Mail reports the company would not elaborate on the cause of the issue that hit its customers nationwide, only saying it was working to rectify the issue.

Telstra NSW media manager David Taylor issued a statement after the network went down just after midday.

“We are aware of an issue currently affecting mobile voice and data nationally,” he said in a statement.

“We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and thank customers for their patience.”

The Telstra outage, described as an “interruption,” is affecting the company’s prepaid mobile phone customers, as well as its 4G and 3G networks that host most of its traffic.

  • Yes happened to me so made the most of the free data they offered as a ‘sorry’ on feb 14 :)

  • I saw a few people complaining about it on Facebook. I’m with Optus though, so of course had no issues. Glad!

  • We were affected but it didn’t worry us a great deal. We have limited to no mobile coverage at home anyway. If I want the mobile to work, I’ve either got to go for a walk through our bottom paddock looking for reception or hop in the car and drive to town. I doubt I would have noticed if I hadn’t been in town that day and tried to use the phone.

  • I read that Telstra is feeling so sorry that on Sunday (S. Valentine Day) they will be giving unlimited free mobile data to all their customers. http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2016/02/telstra-is-giving-away-unlimited-free-data-to-make-up-for-yesterdays-network-outage/

  • Just read that this was as a result of human error (someone plugging a cable into the wrong hole). He must have felt so bad!

  • I’m with Telstra and never had any interruptions.

  • Modern technology can cause huge dramas if they break down. The people I feel most for are those who live in areas where Telstra Mobile Phones are their only available option of communication. They will be in trouble in an emergency
I wonder which provider Emergency Services have to rely on.

  • That explains a bit – so much for the tech savvy world we live in.

  • Feel sorry for the call centre operators, the social media team and those in their retail stores who will no doubt be dealing with abuse from unhappy customers.

  • Not affected, but this sort of thing can be really annoying.
